hiya imperfectikno.
i too have a large history of family/siblings with diabetes and insulin dependant they are all type 2's
i had similar resaults as you my hba1c was 7.1 and was diagnosed as type 2 in december just gone.
i am not saying that you have diabetes as your gp is best for diagnosis but i am sure someone will give you the information all new members get which explains most of the questions running around your head either way you've come to the right forum good luck and welcome don't be afraid to ask someone will be sure to have had the same or similar questions they are a good friendly lot
Rob :)

sorry imperfectikno i should read more carefully
your gp said you are diabetic.
type 2 is generally the over 40 year olds but not always.
sounds like type 2 to me but thats just because it seems the same as mine i am not on medication only diet controlled at least for now.
i have lowered my carbs and have so far managed to lower my blood sugars and losing some weight
hope this helps...
Rob :)

That is a normal hba1c but the fasting blood glucose is higher than the criteria for diagnosing diabetes (7). It sounds like it's been caught early on, which is good.
The doctor will have ordered the tests for type 1 diabetes because of you age and family history. Either way it's good that it has been caught early, some people have high blood sugar for years before they find out.

Hi imperfectiknow and welcome to the forum :) You have made the right choice of forum - we have so much information on here and a good search engine and if you ask a question someone is bound to know the answer. While you are waiting to find out if you are type 1 or 2 so we can help you better, here is the information that Lister was referring to earlier on which is given to newly diagnosed diabetics and written by the forum monitors. It will help you get started in looking after yourself:

You may well receive information on diet etc from your health professionals that differs from what is in our document but this is what we believe in and it produces good results. Up to you to make the choice! :)

A similar thing happened to me as I was diagnosed with an Hba1c of 5.8. However this is only an average of your levels over 8-12 weeks and doesn't show how high your levels actually go. That's why the fasting tests are so important. Mine were 8.6 and 8.4 which shows the Hba1c is only a rough guide. So you will have to accept that you are diabetic I'm afraid as the doctor says you are. 9.8 is also too high for a test at 2 1/2 hours after eating. As for whether you are type 1 or type 2, you will just have to wait for the results of your tests to know which you are. Good luck :)

I was Diagnosed in March as type II my first Hbac1 was 11.3% and three months Later 5.6% and that's down from 127Kg to 99Kg .. My original reading I got from a friend that prompted me to got to the doctors was a BG Level of 15.4 , and my reading from the Doctors after 12 Hour Fasting was BG 15.
So now I'm 5 months in and I feel great , I cant recall ever feeling so good for so long , my meds seem to give me minimal side effects , my weight has gone from 127Kg to 93Kg , I keep a regular routine with my diet , so things are ok for me ..

I recall I was very confused with all the info I got at time of Diagnoses , but I found my Nurse to be very helpful if I didn't understand something I was right on the phone .. and of course got lots of help and advise form this forum ...

I had many years of eating like a idiot although I would always classed myself as a fit fatty , when I went downhill it was fast , so for me my Type II has only improved my Life so far , I wish you luck with your Type II ..
