Confused female

I was diagnosed on 10th Nov after a routine doctors trip lead to a blood test and a blood glucose reading ( I think ) of 17.7 after which I was immediately put on Metformin 500mg. Up until now I have had a pretty regular menstrual cycle but I havent had a period since I started taking the drug. I have been told by someone that Metformin can cause fake pregnancy symptoms like no periods and swollen breasts. Can anyone put me straight on this :|

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm not on Metformin, does it say anything in the leaflet that comes with the tablets? I'd give your GP a call and ask them either way.

Ann

I don't take metformin, and definitely not an experts but I am aware that it is sometimes given to women with PCOS with irregular or no periods . It seems to help restore the menstual cycle, rather the opposite to what you were told.

I really think the best person to ask about this is your doctor.

I'm not on metformin either and wholeheartedly agree you should ask doc for advice.
but, just wanted to mention: I did stop having periods for a bit after diagnosis, and I think there's a thread on here where several others mentioned this happened to them too - could be the stress of it, especially if you weren't expecting to be diagnosed diabetic. And/or could be your body adjusting to new lower sugar levels.
I think by 3 or 4 months after diagnosis I was back to normal (very regular) but it did give me a bit of a fright.

I'm on Metformin and I had the same problem when I was first diagnosed.
Since then (just over a year) my periods have been haphazard. Some months normal, some about 45 days!!
I mentioned it to my DN and about the PCOS link but she said that in the latest guidelines they have been told they are no longer to prescribe it for PCOS. She said it wouldn't be anything to do with the Metformin, it was just my age!! I am 46 so it could be, but it is still a co-incidence.
I did read up online about it a bit and I found a forum discussing PCOS and planned pregnancies and some of the ladies were saying the Metformin often stopped their periods but they were still ovulating ok so could still get pregnant.......I guess you believe which version you want.
Regards
Angie

Thank you everyone for the advice. Not due to see the doctor again til January. Dont know what way my levels are as I have not been given a monitor and feel slightly overwhelmed as there is so much information to take in. At least now I have found the forum I feel a bit better, knowing there are others in the same boat as myself. Thanks again and have a great Christmas everyone xx

You can buy blood glucose meters from chemists if you would like to check your blood. Meters are fairly reasonably priced, but the test strips are expensive. Lots of info on other threads about that if you search for test strips.
I've just thought... if there's a chance you could actually be pregnant it's worth doing a pregancy test. Just because you're now diabetic doesn't mean you aren't fertile!

HI there, just read this note, Yes i am the same i am on Metformin started last year and yes i missed to Periods throught it was the menopause aged 47. But started then as normal after that. But have just had my meds upped on the metformin and guess what again missed 2 periods. Now have settled down again. So i definately think it is the metformin for me that has done that. Also i found about a week before i am due i start to get quiet a few lows so watch your diet around that time as just sneaks up on me. Now i know to watch and be aware.
