Confused need help!

Hi
I am a 23 year old girl who may have been diagnosed with diabetes but the doctors are not telling me if I am or not. I have just recently had a fasting blood sugar test done which showed my sugar levels are 8.0. Can someone tell me if this is high or not as all this is new to me? I have always suffered from dehydration and constant urination at some point but I have been getting a lot of attacks where my legs go numb, I am really aggressive for no apparent reason, I feel like I am going to pass out, nausea light headedness exhaustion and really bad blurred vision. These attacks are getting worse and they won't do a glucose tolerance test for two weeks as the nurses are all booked solid. I am getting very angry that I am having to continue like this without any help and I could do with some advice as to what I should do in the meantime. Diabetes are hereditary in my family, my dad has it, my nan, gran and grandad all had it. If someone could just suggest what I could do to help these attacks as they are making my life a misery I would be most grateful.

Thanks

Michelle Sibthorpe

More experienced folk will be along soon but in answer to your query about a fasting result of 8, well mine was 8.3 when diagnosed three months ago and this is diabetes. Obviously you need the doctor to do more than he's done so far but thought that might help in judging whether it's high or not.
Oh, and welcome - there's lots of really good help and advice here. You won't walk the walk alone!

Hi Michelle and welcome to the forum. You have put in your profile that you are a type 1 on insulin, is this the case ?
You really need to find out quickly as type 1 can quickly get out of control and you may end up in hospital!
The test you have had is preliminary one and they will not diagnose till you have the second test.
However if you are a type 1 you need this confirmed quickly.
You need to see your GP asap and get the proper information from him/her. I suggest , if you want, taking a diabetic member of your family with you so they can explain to you what the doctor is thinking.

sorry i didnt mean to put type 1 i wasnt sure what to put myself as. i have had 2 fast blood sugar tests and they both came back high so i am puzzled to know whats going on and my family are worried esp as i keep having these attacks i nearly fell down stairs as my vision went really blurred so i am scared also i really appreciate the advice

thanks

michelle

When I was diagnosed my doctor at the time said that 3 tests with a fasting glucose level over 7.0 would be classed as diabetes, but from what I have been told by others nationally there are different guildines and values. Its mad I have collegues living 10 miles down the road whose target hba1c's are nearly 2% less than the target given by my doctor.

I know this is a confusing and worrying time for you but all I can say is do your best to relax. I know it must be rather frustrating waiting for an appointment. In the meantime just be careful and if needs be then dont be afraid to visit your local A & E. Might be an idea to speak to your doctor and get some extra advice, because as has been stated especially if its type 1 then things can spiral out of control.

If you have diabetics in the house , next time you have one of your attacks I suggest that someone tests your blood sugar levels to see if you are very low or very high.
