Hi everyone
I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic about 5 years ago, and prescribed Metformin (500 x 3 daily) after two years. After a recent HBa1C of 9, my GP supplemented the Metformin with Gliclazide, a combination I have swallowed for the last three weeks.

Much to my dismay, I have gained over 7lbs in weight, which for me, is a deal-breaker. I suffer from depression, and a 'feeder' (pardon the pun) for my depression is weight gain. I understand the seriousness of diabetes-related complications, and the need to reduce my sugar levels, but I cannot cope with gaining extra weight. I have stopped taking the Gliclazide, and have an appointment to discuss the way forward, but not with my usual GP, who is unavailable for the next three weeks!

I'm easily confused, and would welcome some straight-forward uncomplicated advice! From what I have read so far, there are some very level-headed folk using this site, so I'm hopeful that someone can perhaps point me in the right direction for unbiased guidance on options for medication, and sensible dietary advice.

Thank-you :)

Your not the only one to get confused!

Welcome EssexBird, I am sure that you will find the advice you are looking for, or at least point you in the right direction. There's a very good type 2 section on the forum with plenty of info, and more than enough fellow type 2's who are very knowledgeable, but any questions just fire away.

Hi and welcome, I was diagnosed type 2 more than 2 years ago. I had been on Metformin 3x 500mg since diagnosis.
I'm afraid I was a bit naughty over Christmas  ate too many sweeties  and my Hb1Ac BG levels rose from 7.0 pre Christmas to 7.6 in 3 months. Plus I didn't really feel much benefit from Metformin alone.
My GP suggested I try an additional medication. I was put on Sitagliptin, along with Metformin 2 weeks ago.
I also started fasting testing each morning. Two weeks ago my morning fasting levels were 7.8 and now they are around 5.7  Seems to have worked for me so far.
I had my annual diabetes review today with the DSN and she is pleased with my results. I asked if Sitagliptin works for most people. Her reply was if there are no improvements in any diabetic meds you have been put on in a time period of 3-6 months it is not going to work for you.
So I am afraid it is back to docs for you and maybe you will be given an alternative.
Good luck and have a read through the forum before your appointment. I also found it helpful to keep a diary of my BG levels. I tested of a morning (pre brekkie), before and 2 hrs after lunch and before and 2 hours after dinner. I think cutting back on my carbs has also helped. I ate a bread roll this afternoon and fell asleep a few hours later
