Confused on my blood sugar readings

hi I am newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and on gliclazine and metformin last night before bed my reading was 7.6 I got up this morning and hadn't eaten but it is now up at 8.9 is that normal for it to go up if you haven't eaten thank you for any advice

Takes time for your stomach and pancreas to digest food so this is nothing out of the ordinary.

I should have mentioned "the morning phenomenon aka the liver dump" that is common in diabetes.
