Doctors telling me that I probably know more than them
Hi, have been on LCHF for 3 weeks now and have read sooooo much information on it. I remain confused as to how many grams of fat I should be aiming for to lose some weight. My blood sugars have been brilliant since starting. Am on about 20-30 grams of carbs per day and aiming for under 1200 cals but not really counting them too much. A ratio or grams total per day would be really helpful.

Hi,

You will probably get as many answers as there are ppl on this forum!
Not that that is a bad thing, but it may keep your confusion going...

I suggest you have a look at this nutritional calculator (the whole site is worth a read, if you haven't found it already).

If you are on 1200 cals a day, I'm guessing you want to lose weight?

My attitude is that (broadly speaking) I control my carbs, eat 'normal' protein, and fill up on veg and fats to my appetite. But I'm not trying for structured eating, or a weight loss plan.

Hope that helps!

Yes, it helps a lot. Thanks so much. Thought I was probably too low on the fats, old habits die hard, and this has confirmed. Thanks again.

I rarely ate fat and had liw carbed except for a period of time when going on tonanpump where
people advised me to wat porridge or toast for breakfast...apart from that 6 months I've been lower carb for 50 years...

I definitely did not have enough fat... I had always thought my food was normal... And balanced... But it wasn't before I read on the imprtance of fat here on this forum.

I did not want to lose weight but did from adding more fat.. Its stabilised now. All I added was food that I thought I hated.. Avocado, olives, home made olive drsssing, salmon and now mackeral.

I have always been 12-50g carb (except the extra porridge/toast 6 months). Not from NHS guidelinez but beacuse of the way I was brought up. Even my not eating fish was due to my upbringinging.

I so wish I had added better fats in earlier. I honestly do. It would be listed as a regret if I actually was asked to lust my regrets during my life.

I now truly believe I have a balanced diet, but its only due to members here encouraging me and discussing eating some more fat....

I don't actually control anything or structure anything besides our weekly shopping.. Thats only hubby trying to ensure our balance stays good...

If I can break habits at 50+ years I hope you can do it earlier.

Hi, I wouldn't be too strict with calories as such if I were you. 20-30 grams of carbs is fine. What you need to focus on is not overdoing protein and then to fill up on fat. You don't want to be be hungry, right? Give LCHF a chance. You may need a LOT of fat initially to feel full but this usually settles in a couple of weeks. It's about normalising hormonal systems. Olive oil, butter, coconut oil, bullet proof coffee, avocado, nuts, cheese, or a mix of them. Maybe not mix avocado with coffee.

What you should do in the mean while is to drink plenty of water and take extra salt.

Right thanks guys, this is helping lots. I am not too fussed about the carb counting but mfp does it for me so I kind of keep an eye. I am now upping the fats and water. I have to say I am not suffering from being hungry at all. Just eating these fats is so alien it may take some getting used to. Anyway started the day with avocado with olive oil, 2 slices of chopped bacon and a fried egg! Onwards.
