Just to say hello I am tom male 54 About two years ago I was diagnosed by a doctor as type 2 diabetic In a second opinion a slightly more optimistic view was taken by my family doctor in that I was just about point of no return. (not on medication yet) At the time of diagnosis I weighed 364 lbs bmi 46.6 SEVERELY OBESE Today two years later I weigh 260lbs bmi 33.3 MODERATELY OBESE My waist has reduced from 56 inch to 46 inch but there is still to much belly fat. What would be interesting to know is where other people have lost a lot of weight is there a sudden improvement in the body’s glucose impairment or is any improvement gradual.

I don’t do much testing of blood glucose but I have included some test rests from yesterday which might show why I feel I am still glucose impaired

Before lunch (half a pizza followed by blackcurrant pie and ice-cream) my blood sugar was 5.4 mmol one hour after the end of the meal 7.9 mmol two hours after the end of the meal 6.0 mmol and 3hours after the end of the meal 5.4 mmol

I look forward to contributing to some of the debates tom

Hi Tom,

Well done on your fantastic weight loss. I believe insulin resistance is improved once weight loss has occured, reducing the viscerol fat around our organs.

I've lost 3st 3lbs since Christmas, about another 1 and a half to go to get well into normal BMI range. Once i've done that I'm going to re-introlduce some carbs and test again to see if there has been any improvement.

I know at the moment I couldn't eat what you've eaten and not have a massive spike .

Mary x

Thanks for response Mary3 because my weight loss will take years I decided at the outset I would have one day a week where I would have something to enjoy this is the only high carbohydrate meal of the week well done with your weight loss I know how hard it is to lose each pound tom

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the forum! You've shown great determination to get your weight down, well done! I would find it very hard to still occasionally have those things in my diet, I'm an all or nothing kind of girl. My treat yesterday was chilli con carne made with kidney beans in chilli sauce (no rice). This has only 20 carbs in a portion plus the tinned toms - I spiked to 7.9 2 hours after the meal even with a 40 minute power walk an hour after. I guess what I am trying to say is your carb sensitivity seems a lot lower than mine, lucky you!!

Thanks fraddycat Chile con carne would enjoy I have excluded it from my diet at the moment because in the past I bought ready made sauces which tend to high in sugar and fat but you have got me thinking tom

Tom, I make it with beef strips or mince, fried with onions, peppers and sometimes courgettes, then when its nicely browned add a can of kidney beans in chilli sauce and a can of tinned toms. Finally an oxo cube and some extra chilli powder. Leave it to simmer for about 30 mins, yum!! (I reckon I could make it with plain kidney beans and just make the sauce with tinned toms, chilli, paprika etc but I had some to use up in the cupboard)
