It all started yesterday.. I took my daughter to do urine sample as she had complained tummy ache whilst weeing (and she is prone to cystitis although we have not had it for good couple of years now...) Anyhow, she finally managed to do a sample and the nurse did a quick test and I was told I needed to see a doctor with her. I was thinking, great, UTI is back...

We finally got to see our doctor, and was told they had tested sugar in her urine sample. I was referred to the hospital for blood test and was told to take her there immediately because of my family history. (My grandmother has diabetes, not sure which type, but she is insuline dependant and has had diabetes as long as I can remember - so I am guessing type 1) I was already slightly confused and didn't even think to ask why they didnt they just do a finger prick test if they were so worried about her sugar levels. Anyhow, I rushed my daughter to the hospital for blood tests and was told her results should be in within 2 days. (not so urgent then..)

I do not do waiting very well, so last night I spend hours reading about diabetes and this morning kept thinking had I missed signs of diabetes...I would have never ever suspected diabetes with Mia, as there has been no symptoms what so ever. She is not overly thirsty child, and doesn't run in and out of toilets, her energy levels are great (too great at times), and she doesn't get ill very often either. No weight loss; loss or increase of appetite - so to be told that she might have diabetes totally shocked me.

I received a phone call from my doctor today (24 hours after the test - so pretty quickly) telling me that my daughters blood results were borderline diabetic. (se said something about between 7 and 8) I was told that Mia was now referred to the hospital to get futher checks because of my family history. I asked whether I should be limiting her sugar intake, or changing her diet and was told to carry on as normal as our diet is fairly stable.

I am soo confused now, what the heck is borderline diabetes? I didn't think it exist with kids. I thought it was either a case of having type 1 or not having it. I seriously hope we will get to speak to hospital soon enough because I am very confused and worried. Oh, and when I mentioned that we were off on holiday in two weeks time, my GP said that she will write the dates down to the referral so that hospital won't book us in for those dates. (We are going away for 17 days, so I guess Mia's tests are not that urgent then?)

I truly hope someone can share some light to this.. looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

A quick reply as I'm off out in a minute. Basically the body attacks the cells in the pancreas and it slowly stops functioning. At the early stages a large amount of insulin is still being produced so doing a random blood test may not prove that they have diabetes. If they haven't eaten for several hours and you do a blood test this would of allowed the pancreas to produce enough insulin to give a non diabetic blood result. testing her about 1/2 hours after she has eaten a sugary meal would give a better indication.
The thirst and increased appetite tend to happen further down the line when the pancreas is failing more. I think my daughter had it for some time before we realised and in fact my son was drinking and weeing a lot and when we took him to A& E they did a random blood test which showed a non diabetic reading but a week later we were back and told he did have type 1.

I would go back to your GP and have some more tests.

Ah thanks for your reply. We did get the bloods done about 2 or so hours after her breakfast (cheerios, plenty of sugar eh) and she also had carton of orange juice about half an hour before the blood test as I was trying to get her drink fluids because I thought she had UTI. Hopefully referral times are not too long and we will get answers soon enough.

Hi again... I would carry on with her normal diet as changing it may not give a true result. She would either have type 1 or not. They tend to use the term border line diabetics when diagnosing type 2. As I said in my previous post it can take many months for any real symptoms to appear.

I'm surprised that they would take this long to perform more tests. If you are concerned or she starts to present any of the classic symptoms ( that you mentioned in your first post), I would take her back to A&E. Another symptom to look out for is the smell of her breath, sometimes described as smelling like pear drops or nail varnish remover. In the meantime, you could buy a blood glucose monitor from a chemist and do some random testing yourself.

I hope you get to the bottom od this as soon as possible.

Hi all,

Thought I come and give a quick update. Finally got our appointment for Mia, which is 4th September. (I guess it wasnt that urgent then!)
I have taken her fasting blood sugar twice whilst visiting a family. First figure was 3.9 and second 5.2. I was ment to do couple mores tests but in the end gave up as Mia was getting hysterical when I got the machine out. (We will have lots of fun at the hospital, I assume they will do glugose tolerance test, or???)
Otherwise nothing has changed and Mia is feeling well. Not sure about myself, I keep watching her like a hawk and sometimes I think maybe she does go to toilet slightly more, but she definately has no other symptoms. Oh I hate the wait, I just want answers.
