i was diagnosed with diabetes nearly a year ago & i still haven't got it under control.

i have been on & off a Atkins type diet for over 5 years but i haven't lost weight. in fact I just got fatter.then i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

over the last 3 weeks i have been eating the diet the diabetic nurse told me too eat. Lots of carbs, fruit & veg. to be honest with you i have felt like ****. My blood sugars have been really high all the time.they have been 10 or 9.i went out last Saturday with my partner & nearly passed out.my blood sugars were 10.9 that day.

i went off a protein high diet as it has been in the news lately that a Atkins type diet is so bad for you.it causes that many health problems.

i also have adrenal fatigue so i thought that i would be less fatigued eating more carbs but it hasn't worked out that way.

i feel very dizzy & faint know thats why i have posted this.

do i go on a atkins type diet again ?

i have been reading that diabetes gets better being on a low fat vegan diet.the book i have been reading is

: The Reverse Diabetes Diet: Control your blood sugar, repair insulin function and minimise your medication - within weeks.

its not working it just seems to be making things worse.

the doctor put me on metformine but i haven't taken it as it makes me feel unwell.may be i should start taking it again ?

I feel your pain! I was diagnosed July 2009 and received the same advice with the same results. Three Nairns oatcakes sent my BG up to 10.8! The trouble was I didn't know that was happening until I started testing; something the doctor and the dietician told me not to do. All i knew was my eyes went blurry after eating and I had searing pains in my fingers.

As I mentioned in another post I got the "eat lots of high quality carbs" advice from a decidedly "porky" dietician who was keen on the idea of low GI. I now know that a lot of the low GI stuff is nonsense as the BG spike is only delayed so a test shows a lower level after two hours, but peaks after 3 to 4 hours. At least that's my experience.

I started low carbing in late November and noticed an immediate improvement. I have not yet got full control but no longer have the really bad symptoms. I started with an A1c of 11.8 and the last one was 6.5. I'm coming up for another one in a couple of weeks.

My thinking is, if you want to put out a fire you don't throw petol on it! To me, it's the same with BG. It's carbs that send it sky high so cut out the carbs. The only carbs I eat now are those that come in the vegetables etc.

In short, I've gone with the high fat, medium protein and low carb option which I believe is different from Atkins. I feel better than I've felt for years!

Re the Metformin, I found the side effects went after a couple of weeks. Do make sure you start with one a day for the first week though and only take them on a full stomach.

I hope this helps, but I'm sure you'll get a lot more advice on this forum.

Good luck,

Ray

Having no energy as this is so limiting.
Hi Tracey and welcome to the forum. :D

I echo what Ray says and suggest you follow his advice. 8)

DO NOT follow the old line about eating starchy carbohydrates! I had to cut out all grains, potatoes etc i.e. 'starchy carbohydrates' before I started to feel any better.

It is about 6 months since I was diagnosed and thanks to the good advice found on this forum my Hba1c last week was 5.5 so I am really chuffed as you can imagine! :D You can do it too if you work at it. Test before you eat and after 2 hours so that you can see what foods you need to cut down or cut out. I wish you well and look forward to hearing how you get on. :)

Great advice that you've had from Ray and Synonym already!

Cutting back on the starchy carbohydrates - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice etc - is the way to go to get control fo your blood glucose levels.

Testing is a good idea too.

Best wishes - John
