I feel your pain! I was diagnosed July 2009 and received the same advice with the same results. Three Nairns oatcakes sent my BG up to 10.8! The trouble was I didn't know that was happening until I started testing; something the doctor and the dietician told me not to do. All i knew was my eyes went blurry after eating and I had searing pains in my fingers. As I mentioned in another post I got the "eat lots of high quality carbs" advice from a decidedly "porky" dietician who was keen on the idea of low GI. I now know that a lot of the low GI stuff is nonsense as the BG spike is only delayed so a test shows a lower level after two hours, but peaks after 3 to 4 hours. At least that's my experience. I started low carbing in late November and noticed an immediate improvement. I have not yet got full control but no longer have the really bad symptoms. I started with an A1c of 11.8 and the last one was 6.5. I'm coming up for another one in a couple of weeks. My thinking is, if you want to put out a fire you don't throw petol on it! To me, it's the same with BG. It's carbs that send it sky high so cut out the carbs. The only carbs I eat now are those that come in the vegetables etc. In short, I've gone with the high fat, medium protein and low carb option which I believe is different from Atkins. I feel better than I've felt for years! Re the Metformin, I found the side effects went after a couple of weeks. Do make sure you start with one a day for the first week though and only take them on a full stomach. I hope this helps, but I'm sure you'll get a lot more advice on this forum. Good luck, Ray
