Type of diabetes
Type 1
I deveolped diabetes after having acute pancreatitis nearly a year ago. I was told I was Type 1. A few weeks ago I saw my diabetes nurse and she was very pleased with me. She sent me a copy of the notes that were sent to my GP from that meeting. I noticed that she had put that I was Type 3 diabetic. I have since seen my GP and mentioned this to her and she confessed that she had never heard of Type 3 diabetes and that they had me on the computer as being Type 2. I`m now very confused as to which type of diabetes I have. Any suggestions?

I've never heard of type 3! There are tests which can show if you're 1 or 2. If you're not sure, (or they're not sure!) ask for the tests.

Well done Helena, never heard of that before. Mind you, it says it's a lack of brain insulin and doesn't affect blood sugars so unlikely to be what Mary has if she has BG issues.

Unfortunately the references in those posts are mostly quite difficult :(
The term type 3 diabetes is sometimes used for other things but when the World health organisation in 1999 set definitions for different types of diabetes they included Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and 'others' These other types happened to be in table 3 . Table 3 was then subdivided alphabetically a-h (ie there are a lot of types of diabetes other than 1 , 2 and gestational

Type 3C: diseases of the exocrine pancreas.

Having said that it doesn't seem to be a widely used label, MODY for example is 3a but never seems to be called it but there are papers that use the label 3c.
