Hi All

I'll take a moment of your time please, at the moment i'am confused & snappy.
I've recently turned 50 (1st of this month), and I'm not enjoying it.
I'm in a position where I feel that I need to vent some steam.
I went for a review at my GP she was very concerned about my weight of 133Kg (she not the only one) & did a fasting blood sugar test.

The results where that I was in the Pre-diabetes range of 45 ( but did not tell me what the unit of measure was) . Also my BP was a bit high so I needed to have it checked, this time I see the very nice Practice Sister . Yep my BP is now higher than last time, while I'm there she does another blood test.

So fast forward to Monday of this week, my blood test result is 51 and shezam she tells me all about me having type2 diabetes. So I'm sat there, thinking ok time to take action. Also my BP, is still silly & so I've got to have a 24 hour monitor box strapped to me.
So I spend all last night, reading lots of interesting stuff.

Today I have a phone consultation with the GP, "O your not diabetic, it was just a blip" come and have a blood test in three months. Then I'll see if I can tell you if your diabetic. No point sending you on any education program yet, till we get the result of the third blood test.
What concerns me is that I have more diabetic symptoms each year, a family history Ect .

So I've contacted the local diabetic support team for some guidance.

Is this normal, do you have to fight for a diagnosis ?

Hi Joe, welcome.

The 45 and 51 will be HbA1C numbers in mmol/mol. These are measures of the blood glucose that attaches to haemoglobin, and so since the blood cells recycle over 10 weeks or so, it is a good guide to average blood levels over that period. Hard to regard such numbers as a blip.

51 is certainly at the lower end of diabetic, and I would insist on another test before three months if you can. Meanwhile, I would get a printout of your full results (you are entitled) and as a precaution start taking appropriate measures to control your blood sugars as if you were diabetic. That means whatever exercise you can manage, and cut down on carbohydrates in your diet - bread, pasta, rice and potatoes especially.

The earlier you tackle it the easier it will be to control. And if it does turn out to be wrong, you won't have lost anything.

not sure what the 45 is but i had a BG test and was 31.5 and was diagnosed as type 2
i would go back to your gp

Hi, and welcome.

I don't really have all that much confidence in GPs and practice nurses. So I tend to do my own research and, where possible, do my own testing.

Waiting 3 months with vague advice and mixed messages would not satisfy me, although it is very similar to my experiences!

My response was to discover this website, and the following
http://www.bloodsugar101.com
http://www.dietdoctor.com
And I read
'Diabetes for Dummies'
All of which are fantastic sources of info.

I also bought a blood glucose meter (available from Boots, eBay and Amazon) and set out on a journey of self discovery about how my body reacts to different foods.

If you fight for a diagnosis, you may find yourself embedded in the system. This has mixed benefits - you should get regular check ups, blood tests, eye tests, and diet advice.

The tests and checks are great - although many doctors don't do the blood tests as often as the guidelines suggest. Some of the advice given is... How can I put this politely? It's absolute nonsense! They tell you not to test, and to eat loads of carbs. Duh?!? How can you know how to control your eating and blood glucose without testing? And if you test, you will soon discover that carbs cause dreadful glucose levels.

The diet advice you get, especially if you are referred to a dietician... Well... If I ate that much carbohydrate I would be on insulin by now! Instead I manage my diabetes type 2 with diet and some exercise.

Keep reading this site. It really is fantastic.

Ally, that wasn't your HbA1c test. I don't know what it was, but had it been your HbA1c you wouldn't have been diagnosed as diabetic. It has to be 48 or more for that.

Thanks all for the information .
My head is a bit clearer today, @Brunneria thanks for the links, book ordered :-)

Also had a reply for Diabetescare, with an invite to there Newly Diagnosed session and the following comment
" If you have a HbA1c of 51 then you do have diabetes especially with the symptoms you have"
So a more happier today, lots to learn and I'm very eager to

Joe
