My husband was diagnosed type 2 about 18 months ago, he is 67 years old and disabled which makes exercise difficult, he cant even walk very far unaided . He was started on Metformin but about 4 months ago, his BS was between 17 and 20 at most readings . Because of this, the nurse put him onto glyclazide , one morning one evening along with his Metformin . He quickly began to have hypos so the dose of Glyc was cut to half at night only but he still had mid morning readings of 3.2 or even 3.1 . The nurse advised cutting out the glyclazide immediately especially as he had also embarked on a very healthy eating regime and cutting down on carbs . However , this morning, despite breakfast , he suddenly began to feel shaky and his BS reading was again 3.1 . I rang our surgery, unfortunately our usual HCP was absent so I spoke to a Doctor , he told me that as long as Pauls reading was not below 3, it was not a hypo and that metformin alone could not cause a hypo and not to worry ! I am confused as I always thought that a reading below 3.5 was not desirable, but this doctor made me feel like I was worrying over nothing and being stupid . My own view is that because Paul has reduced carbs , his dose of Metformin may now be too high but the doctor poo poo`d this theory , saying that regular 3.1 or 3.2 wasn't anything to be stressed about , anyone have any views please ? Thanks for reading .

There are some of us that can tolerate hypo readings below 4. But some start having symptoms above 4.
If he is getting the symptoms than treat it as you would normally do.
There could be many reasons why he is having these lows, it probably won't be the metformin.
Only tests could determine this. Is he eating regularly? Anything recent changed in his other meds?
It could be his other meds?
I would classify 3.5 as a hypo and I think I've had more experience than your doctor.
Maybe someone else could help.

Hi, sorry you haven't had many responses, hopefully my post will bump this thread up to the top again, and more people will see it.

It is a common misconception that people can't hypo on metformin.

Of course they can! If the right combination of factors combine, anyone can hypo.
It's just rare for people on met.

Personally, I would agree with you that with fewer carbs and better diet he may well be taking too big a dose. But we can't advise on meds on the forum, and he really needs to discuss this with a sensible doc or nurse.

I would keep the pressure up at the surgery. Make an appt. keep asking. Take in BG test records showing the hypo evidence.

And write a letter pointing out that the doc who gave you the gumph about 3.1 not being a hypo is giving out wrong, and potentially dangerous info. If you address it to the Practice Manager, it shouldn't get ignored.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, that's very helpful , I will ring the practice on Monday morning and keep a close eye on him over the weekend .
