Type of diabetes

So my BG today has been 18.1 then 24 then 23.3
I visited my GP who told me high figures like this won't make me sick


ermmm.....I feel really rubbish. I have sores that have not healed in 10mnths, constant anti-biotics and recurrent thrush....

Im just really confused how high numbers like this is of 'no concern'

I take Glucophage.
 
Sorry to hear you're feeling rough. I'd feel bad if my blood sugar was that high too.

Have you told your doctor how you're feeling and about your health problems (which could be connected to high sugars)?
 
Looks like you need to seriously consider changing your current Dr ASAP. These figures are far too high and though they won't make you physically sick, they certainly won't do your body any good either in the short term and most certainly not in the long term.
Daisy will probably be along shortly with the standard advice that she sends out to all new diabetics who register on this site. It's excellent advice and having read it you should aim to follow the advice to the letter. Your high Blood Glucose readings need to be brought down under proper control through the appropriate dietry control, exercise and appropriate medications. What Medications are you currently prescribed and what advice and follow up with the DN and Dietician have you been offered.
Recurrent Thrush is a common result of having High Blood Glucose levels which is something that your Dr should know and be aware of..

Yes, I am considering changing my GP. I am very unhappy with the care I have been recievig. I was diagnosed in 2012 and was told that monitoring my BG was not necessary. I was on metformin, which makes me physically ill. Eventually after a lot of moaning they changed it to metformin SR and now Glucophage 500mg which I take 1000mg twice a day. I am a veterinary nurse so have been running BG curves at work. Frnakly I believe our diabetic animals get better care than I have witnessed from my health care people. At one point about 4wks ago my BG was 37.8. My GP's response was that it fructuates during the day. Im very angry. When Im sick I seem to have whatever it is a lot longer than normal and have to take loads of antibiotics which then cause thrush. In October I had thrush for 16wks. Yes, I have told my GP Im concerned. Today infact! They seem to have a 'meh' attitude and that I am not complaint because I have not seen the nurse. I have wound from a cat bite from 10mnths ago. I have had 5 courses of ABs and they are still not healed. I pretty much see my doctor every month for something. They are aware. I bought a Glucometer from Bayer and have been monitoring this week. I pretty much feel rubbish ALL the time and my readings are horrifically high. My GP really does not seem very concerned. I am trying. I have lost 2stone and am taking the advice off the Bayer and Diabetes UK site about diet and so on.......but I think there should be more action from the GP. They just do not seem interested at all.
 
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm so sorry to hear of all your on-going troubles and I think that a change in DR should be your first move into taking control of your own diabetes. It might also be worth contacting the appropriate PCT to complain of the health care that your current DR has been giving. It probably wont help you at this moment in time but at least it may help someone else who uses the same DR.
Working in the Veterinary practice as you are will give you a good insight into diabetes, for as you will know, diabetes isn't something that is only confined to us humans.
As I mentioned in my earlier reply, this site will tell you all that you need to know and could also teach the NHS a thing or two along the way as well.
Diabetes is a condition that you can take control of for yourself, make your own decisions based on the good evidence available here on this site. Diet is critical in good control and many find the LCHF diet is ideally suited to both Type 1 and especially Type 2 diabetics.
If you happen to have a walk in 'Well-Woman" centre near you I would suggest that you make a visit there as soon as is practicable, failing that call by your local A&E and mention to them all the health problems that you've outlined already. You need to do this as B/G readings reaching 37.8. mmol/L are a matter of serious concern and can seriously effect your health.

That's shocking @gaismith No wonder you're angry! I'm Type 1 but I felt awful when I was diagnosed and my blood sugar was 'only' 25!

I second the advice to look at getting a new GP. In the meantime, as you have a blood testing meter you could record your results so that you can show them to your new doctor.

Many people with Type 2 follow a low carb diet with very good results. You could think about trying this to see if it gets your blood sugar in range, or lower, at least. It may be that that won't be enough and your meds might need looking at too. As I'm sure you know from your job, the ideal is for a person with diabetes to have their blood sugars as much in the normal range as possible. Some Type 2s manage that with diet alone, some with tablets, some with insulin.

If you can get your sugars down, hopefully your other problems will improve. Certainly, the thrush should. Your body will be in a better condition to heal too.

I feel for you. Keep fighting to get the care you need - and deserve.
 
Those numbers are far too high.

I agree with the others that you need to get a second opinion, and that the dreadful way you are feeling, and your other symptoms are very likely to be connected to high blood glucose levels.

Do you know what your last HbA1c reading was? My doctor said he would be concerned if my readings were consistently higher than 17.

I get thrush through anti-biotics too, but your high BGs will definitely be contributing to this.

Hope you get it sorted soon.
 
Blood for HbA1c was taken yesterday. I did book on Monday and they sent the wrong test. I went to get the results and found out they ran a fasting cholesterol instead of HbA1c. No, I did not fast so what was the point of that. Picked up a fuss and they agreed to take my blood again for the right test. Was a bit of a drama and the nurse tried to take blood in the exact place i have a raging hematoma and bruise from last time. Not impressed to say the least. I know the mechanism in animals is different but treatment concepts are the same and high BGs are not good. But our patients get so much better care than i have had .................just wanna smack someone about.
