I've just had Fasting and Glucose Tolerance tests, and the results are strange – I got a printout (along with sheaves of others telling me my liver’s now paying the price for decades of immoderate drinking etc), but it seems to be self-contradictory.
I had one blood sample taken at 9 in the morning, after a 12-hour fast, then drank half the EU’s glucose mountain – peach-flavoured and very nice it was, too – then another sample at 11.
The first page says:
Plasma fasting glucose level 5.5 mmol/L
120 minute plasma glucose level 6.9 mmol/L
Now, my limited knowledge suggests these are about OK. However, the second page (which is Urea and Electrolytes - the U's & E's they always ask for in hospital soaps!) also contains a Plasma fasting glucose level, but it's completely different!
Plasma fasting glucose level 6.8 mmol/L
Serum urate level 0.37 mmol/L
My question, to all you seasoned experts out there – given I only had one sample taken after fasting, at 9:00 that morning, how can I have 2 results for the glucose level, and quite different from each other? Am I being stupid in some way?
Thanks!
