Hi,
I have been getting confusing blood sugar readings these past 24 hours and I need some advice.
I have been diabetic for 22 years, I am type 1 so inject.
I inject a 70/30 mix as I did yesterday morning at 7 AM. I took 22 units. Blood reading was 10.4 before I injected. I had my usual bowl of Oats at 8 AM then at lunch 1 PM I had 3 slices of wheat loaf and a cuppa soup. At 4 PM I had a hypo, I am not sure of the reading as I did not take one, as I knew from experience that I was low. I had a bowl of coco pops and brought my sugars back up.
At 7 PM when i usually have my dinner I checked my blood and it was 16.8, this was high for me. I had not eaten anything else since the hypo. I took another 26 units to bring my blood down, but I did not eat anything. At 9 PM thinking that my sugars should have come down by now I tested myself again and to my amazement my sugar had gone up to 16.9 and not down.
At 10 PM I was hungry and needed to get to sleep so I had a bowl of corn flakes and went to bed. At 4 AM this morning I had another hypo and this time tested myself. It was 3.1. I took another bowl of corn flakes with one table spoon of regular sugar and went back to bed, when feeling better.
I tested myself at 7 AM this morning and strangely my blood was exactly the same as last night, 16.8. I took 24 units of insulin four more units as normal and had my bowl of oats. Went out to do some work and tested myself this afternoon at 12 noon and my sugars were 18.4, so had gone up even though i had not eaten anything that I normally do not eat.
Last week for example I tested my blood when i woke up at 7 AM and it was 10.4, I had 20 units of insulin and my bowl of oats, by 10 AM I was having a Hypo.
Today though after following the same pattern and eating the same thing, my blood sugars are going up. I do however feel that my Blood sugar is low. I doubled tested myself last night to make sure the reading was correct, which is was, it came back with the same 16.8 even though I took the blood from another finger which was properly cleaned with water and tissue.
It does not make any sense, I am thinking that my meter is wrong though it gave me a correct reading of 3.1 this morning during my hypo.
I have been using the same insulin for over 6 years now too and up until yesterday it was working fine.
I must add that I live in the tropics for over 10 years and not in the UK anymore. I use a generic form of insulin which is much cheaper but has never caused me any complications in all the years I have used it. The test meter is from the UK and so are the strips.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I will update this post with my readings over the next few days.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
Regards,
Matt.
