Hi there
I have had three tests to diagnose diabetes
1. Non fasting test = 55
2. Fasting (HbA1c) = 50

Meeting with GP tells me I have type 2 diabetes and has entered me on the Register. I ask for the glucose test, I figure I have all of the tests so I have a baseline.

3. Glucose = "test showed impaired glucose that could lead to diabetes"

I cannot see the GP until next week.
Do I have diabetes or not??

Wit the results in 1 & 2 I would say yup. Your BG is 8-10 time what it should be; that isn't just a blip. Even if you had 10 bags of haribo; if you were 'normal' ur BG would never get that high.

I am guessing that those results are in the newer system rather than the older. An HbA1C of 50 is 6.7 in old money. Diabetes is likely, but further tests may be appropriate to completely confirm if you have any doubt.

With great respect, if your GP says so, then you are. If you have doubts about his abilities as a GP, change doctors. Sorry to be blunt, but it seemed such a rhetorical question.
I'm sorry that you've had that diagnosis, it's not the end of the world, but it does mean some extra work to keep things under control. There's plenty of help available on this and other forums and I think it's fair to say that a lot of diabetics reduce their carb intake to some degree to get better control of their blood glucose. I know that when I stopped eating potato/pasta/rice/bread and reduced my carb intake to about 80gms a day, I was able to ditch the gliclazide and Januvia and better still the statins went out the window as well because although not where NICE would like it, my total cholesterol is much better on the lower carbs.
All the best

Hi, thank you everyone for your replies, they are incredibly helpful. I finally got to see my GP who had to confer with her colleagues about the glucose result. I am definitely diabetic; the feeling is the impaired glucose result is due to my recent weight loss. I have lost nearly 2 stone since June.

I saw my diabetes nurse this morning for the first time. Feet OK, cholesterol level below 5, eye sight to be checked plus a referral to an educational group.

It's now diet controlled diabetes and lots of check ups.
