Hi all. Type 1 44 years, epileptic and coeliac. Have had a fair bit of stress going on during the last month which has been difficult. Most days I can battle on and am a fairly upbeat person. I’m having to have a uterine biopsy soon as something has come back as suspicious, but there’s been some debate about whether it should be without pain relief or with a general. I’ve become very anxious. I went out on New Year’s Eve and had 3 small glasses of red wine after tea. I came home and become unresponsive and violently sick. The paramedics came and I went to a and e. My blood sugar was 9 and they’ve found nothing wrong? Since then I’ve felt unwell and my blood sugars won’t come down? They’ve been more erratic recently as I’m off over Christmas and don’t have a routine but it’s as if I’ve become resistant to insulin? Today they’ve hovered around the 17 mark and all I’ve had is celery, carrots as cheese, and a lot of water. I’ve upped my insulin a lot to no effect. Can stress cause this? My blood sugar’s were fine yesterday all day, even when the paramedics came. It’s today that it’s all gone pear shaped. Any clues?

Stress can certainly cause high blood sugars, as can illness. And once you're high insulin resistance can increase.

Do you have any way to test for ketones? In your position, with diabetic ketoacidosis a distinct possibility, I would do this, preferably using a blood testing meter (if you have a meter that tests for ketones) and if you don't have this use urine testing strips.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to call for medical help, particularly if you have high ketones.

Maybe just phone 111 and ask for advice on insulin dosing anyway.

Good luck and happy new year.

@conniecar - You've really had a torrid time of late. I hope you start feeling a bit better and more relaxed soon.

If your numbers are unexpectedly high, have you tried another pen at all?

(I agree about plenty testing and alerting if you see yourself going in the worng direction.)

Hi @conniecar ,

Sorry to hear about your issue.
You mentioned comming home & becoming unresponsive & violently sick after drinking red wine on a night out? (With a BG of around 9mmol.)

This gonna sound like an odd question. Were you drinking with people you know whilst out?

Hi and I hope things are coming down of their own accord by now! Stress whether emotional or physiological always make my bgs shoot up. It is some kind of insulin resistance caused by your body perceiving the need to keep energy levels up. Provided there is no underlying infection and any pain is managed those sugars should come down.
It is frustrating and debilitating but hopefully not damaging in the long term. Obviously drink lots of water to help your kidneys and do check from ketones if you are prone to them.
The other thing that sent my blood sugars crazy recently was pain combined with sleep deprivation.
