Cookery Book For Type 1

Hi there. My son Ben was diagnosed with type 1 last July at the age of 10. In my constant search for information I hunted for a cookery book to help me with good recipe ideas/ info on carb counting / foods to avoid or include/ideas for free snacks when he was injecting etc. I was often at a loss to ensure that I was doing everything right. Other than the carbs and cals book for straight carb counting, there appears to be nothing on the market - so I've started to put one together with the help of my nurse.

If anyone has any ideas that they (or their children) would like to see in the book, please can you let me know. Also any good recipes that you think should be included or tried out.

Thanks for your help

Wendy

Thank you. That looks really useful for carb counting etc, although no recipes. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes for breakfast!!!??

I've not read the document but found it the other day whilst I was looking at their website and thought it might be useful to those who need to learn about carb counting still. I already know how to carb count so didn't read it. I agree, Crunchy Nut Cornflakes is not a breakfast I would choose :)

I think useful advice to include in your cookbook would be:

1) When reading nutritional labels look at the carbohydrate content and not just the sugar content.
2) A list of suggested snacks that will not raise blood glucose very much. These snacks would be useful to use when your child doesn't want a bolus injection to go with the snack.
3) Advice that cooking meals from scratch is far better than buying processed ready-made meals - that way you know exactly what is going into the food.
4) Advice on how to work out the carb content per portion or per 100g of home cooked foods e.g. home baked goods, dishes that contain more than one ingredient.

Good luck with the book :)
