It's an interesting debate, to be sure.

There is one line in the "Medical News Today" rules that, as a lawyer, did make me chuckle

We're ONLY discussing things here. What's so different about a written discussion to a spoken discussion? When in (spoken) conversation, you don't give reference to any quotes that you bring up, so why should it be any different on a discussion board?

There's a big misconception that discussions on discussion boards are different to real life discussion. Why should they be ANY different? (Besides the fabulous anonymity that so many of us relish... :twisted

If any website is really concerned about their protected material then all they have to do is set the relevant pages up so that 'right clicking' is disabled.

I use linux not windows can copy anything i wish .If you use windows explorer you have already downloaded the photo on you PC for faster page reload ,look in
C:\Documents and settings\LocalService\Temp\Temporary Internet Files
If you use firefox web-browser you can use all kinds of add on helpers to download anything

If i wish i can spoof my IP address and mac Address then use the chaps over the road wifi
use his PC mac number so looks like his the bad boy not me
Google (Backtrack 4 or 5) the Sport is called Wardriving Google it

If you upload on the Internet and use wifi may as well run around with your knickers down

Whether it's a discussion or not when it is published as on this forum then surely we should all uphold the rights of those individuals whose work is being copied and re-published here, with no credit given. They deserve to be treated correctly even if they are not members here. We don't want to upset the people who are helping us with food choices or information.....do we ? Forum life is very different to a face to face conversation where the rules are more flexible and not set in stone. However, one wouldn't wish to offend anybody........would we.........

Anyway, benedict has asked us all to do our bit for the forum and I think we should all help him and his team out........I am sure he and they cannot afford to spend all their time looking after the forum and keeping those high standards we are all used to........

Discussing something is not the same as copying and pasting a whole article letting people assume that all the work gone into creating that article was your own.

I am not saying that people are doing it on purpose but if someone copies and pastes a recipe and starts or finishes with a sentence in the lines of "This is how I make it" than everyone will assume that the recipe and the way that particular food is cooked is their own and not copied from someone else.

If, however, someone starts with a similar sentence and writes the whole thing in their own words then it would not be subject to copyright laws. It would be the same as writing a news story in ones own words than copying and pasting word for word from another website.

Are they originals or "spoofed" (fakes) and can I be certain that you used them once ONLY? :lol:

I have been involved in the production of a cook book for athletes and we had to be completely sure recipes did not belong to anyone. That is a problem as recipes get passed about by friends etc it becomes difficult to prove who has ownership, especially if they alter them slightly. Taking them from a book or website would probably infringe some kind of copy right or require an acknowledgement.

seeing as I also posted recipes found on the net I comiserate with you serena. Perhaps I am wrong to but I tend to think that anyone who posts their precious recipes on the net would like other people to see and use them... why else would you post them? Why share knowledge if you dont want it to be used? strange? ...I mean a recipe is generally not a thesis someone has slaved over is it? Also, from my personal perspective of someone who is trying to find a new way forward with a very restricted diet compared to what went before... I just feel i need all the help I can get from low carb recipes which have been tried and tested and I felt other newbies would benefit too. but frankly this does look like a grumpy discussion and as a culprit I cant help feeling a little taken aback. Like Serena I had no intention to cause a stir (ha!- pun!) and just thought I was helping. I shall try to keep a record of links in future but I havent generally bothered. I simply am looking for a supply of recipes which are low carb and will help me to manage my new diet and lifestyle.

should have said its not that I dont agree with copyright or ackowledging work as someone elses, recipe or thesis.. and also that I dont understand the moderators position. I just find the idea of having to account for everything tedious... when i posted recipes i was just posting low carb because I felt the forum would benefit from more of them. I wasnt analysing where I'd found them or whether they were copyright free. ignorance isnt innocence, but i kind of posted innocently. hope us culprits are forgiven.

The people who have taken the time and have the skills to work out recipes deserve the recognition when they are posted or linked to on any forum. It is their right to have it made clear when they are posted that it is THEIR work. Many are happy to have the recipes used for personal use BUT most clearly state that ANY re- publication has to have an acknowledgement posted at the same time.

The rules of most Fora are clear about what should happen and most members adhere to that - its simple really. Post the link to the recipe and put a part of it in a quote box. As for the reason Mods do something about it if not done properly is because breaches of Copyright can cause problems, not just for the person who posts them, but also the owner/administrator of the website - DCUK.

We should all try to comply with those very simple rules and avoid causing possible problems here just because someone doesn't feel like, or can't be bothered to check out the Copyright doesn't make it right for the original authors rights to be ignored........it isn't just about recipes either !

That isn't anybody being 'grumpy' - its just looking after the people who take the time and trouble to compile such things. Most times they are not aware that their recipes etc are being misused by well meaning but often misguided people. If you want to do it - do it right. Is that so hard to do ?

I would say all of us have used recipe or information from the net and used it for our own personal use. the problem lies when you reproduce this as if its your own, to my mind its common courtesy to acknowledge the site/author and not make out it is your own by changing words etc. Forum rules are forum rules and I hope admin keep a eye on future activities regarding this matters as we wouldn't want the site owners getting into trouble over copyright issues.

You select your text using ctrl c or R click copy.
Then press quote at the top of the text box and appears. The cursor is in the right place to insert your text using ctrl v or R click paste.

If you want to quote from a preceding post just click on the quote box at the top rh of the message and it appears in a reply box.

When I post a recipe on here it is what I make at home and not taken from any book or website ,but I must have got the idea for some part of the recipe from somewhere at sometime I think we probably all adapt recipes even the ones handed down from Granny.

That's very true Carol.....however the ones that cause problems are those that are verbatim copies from other places, it's plagiarism ! If they were to stick to the letter of copyright I suppose that many people have adapted something, however they usually say "it's adapted from a Delia or whatever recipe." That's being honest.

Credit where credit is due I say.........
