Correct Diagnosis Test?

Hi All,

Went to Doc about ten years ago after friend with type 2 checked by blood and said it was high.
Doctor did a ketone test in urine I think, but did not do or offer blood test.

Diagnosed with type 1, May 2010 and have good control with HBA's usually about 5.5. I have background retinopothy and realise now that neuropothy in my feet is not going to go away and they are super senstive, cannot do anything barefoot and will have to change career (or take anti-epilectics or anti-depressants).

I'm feeling a bit miffed as I think that if it had been caught at that time I would not have developed the complications. Should I have had a blood test? or was checking for ketones an acceptable test at that time?

Keith.

Hi. When I was diagnosed with Type 2 7 years ago by my GP as I had all the symptoms all he did was a urine stick test; he never did any blood test at that time. I think things have improved a lot in recent years. Perhaps the urine stick he used for you measured glucose as well as ketones; many do multiple tests? I guess you will never know whether he could have done a more thorough job, but it should have included at least a blood test with a meter. If you read the forum you will find the NHS is a bit of a lottery with regard to diabetes hence its existence.

Personally I think you should have been given the blood tests. I'm sure you may have been able to avoid all complications with the correct diagnosis - especially as you are obviously taking excellent care of your levels.
