Correction does not working

Had a take away pizza for tea last night.
I checked the website for the nutritional values and injected, what I thought was, the right amount.
Went to bed three hours later 8.3.

Woke up at 3am feeling thirsty and desperate for the loo. Tested bg and it was 21.8! Felt rotten so doubled correction dose and went back to sleep.
Woke up every hour needing the loo and a drink so was pretty much going round in circles.
When I woke up this morning, despite my double correction my bg is 18.4 so I have doubled it again.

Does anyone know why it isn't working?
I'm doing my best here and losing!

Pizza is horrific for getting dose right!

How old is your insulin? Did you use a fresh needle? Wash your hands before testing?

High BG needs more insulin to bring it down. Correct again and monitor this morning.

I know, my fella wanted it for tea as a treat. Won't be having that again!!
It's a fairly new cartridge that I got from the chemist a few weeks ago, it's been working fine until now.
I didn't use a new needle as I was still half asleep!
Will be testing and correcting every couple of hours and using a new needle.

I saw someone with a partially blocked needle on DAFNE.... I use fresh every time!

Bolus takes up to 4 hours to work so try to avoid correcting more often than 4 hours

I know I should use a new one every time but it's hard when I'm out and about and things.
Will be making more of an effort with it though.

I'll try not to correct too much.

It's hard but not reusing the needle is really important for ensuring the dosing is correct. Insulin can crystallise in it and block it. I use a little cath kitson pencil case to hold my pen and 6 needles so I'm never reusing :)

I hope that BG is dropping and your feeling better!

That's a good idea, I used to change it every time. Can't remember when or why I stopped!
Last injection was about an hour and half ago, came down to 9.6 now so that's good. I think I mohr hypo later on though!

Hypo is possible but just keep and eye and you'll be fine :)

I'm the opposite. I have to be so careful with correction doses to avoid hitting the floor 2 hrs later. 1u as a correction dose will generally drop me 3 mmol/l.

That's what my correction dose should be, if it's too high though it doesn't work.
No idea why!

1u drops me about 7mmol/l. I'm extremely cautious with corrections for that reason! 0.5u can leave me on the floor

That's a big drop!

I haven't had a hypo :) hovering at around 9

Hi Indiana, pizza is a well known trouble maker for diabetics. The impact of the carbs hits many hours later, usually once your insulin has worn off. Even on a pump (where you can give the insulin over an extended period of time), I'm usually still feeling the effects of the carb hit 12 hours later. It's for this reason that I avoid pizza at all costs!!! As others have said, watch out for a hypo following the insulin stacking you've been doing.

I don't think I'm going to hypo now, it's been about 5 and a half hours since my last injection.

I usually have spikes after pizza but not this bad!
As I said, it was a treat. Won't be having it again for a very long time though!
