I found this site because I was researching the effect of a cortisone show on sugar levels. I had been diagnosed almost 20 years ago. I had a gastric bypass and lost weight and within two weeks of my surgery I was off all meds. I hadn't been diagnosed that long, only like a year previous.
In October of 2017 I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder. And, a little history, I had put some weight on after the surgery but in the last three years lost weight, stabilized it, and was eating healthier than I ever had, even after my surgery. I hired a trainer and was watching carbs, cut back on sugar, etc. I really felt the best I ever have. Then I fell while working out, hence the shoulder injury, hence the cortisone shot.
I had side effects that I knew about immediately that lasted more than 15 days, and I had no clue about it affecting blood sugar. I only found out my sugar was high because I happen to have surgery on January 3 of 2018. I hadn't been checking blood sugar since my bypass and also I had a minor surgery in February of 2017 and there were no issues during that surgery.
So just wondering if anyone out there can tell me any more information on the relationship to cortisone and diabetes type 2. It does not run in my family but obviously I am predisposed due to my history. I only had one shot but, like I said, I had severe effects including dehydration to the point of waking up with leg cramps, severe, and bleeding like a period even though I am way past that period of my life. Just looking for any information, any research, any doctor that won't deny the existence of the effects of cortisone shots. It seems mostly doctors and the drug companies deny that it raises blood sugar more than three days. I am now on 500 mg of metaformin four tablets a day. ugh. It seems in control and my readings have been in the normal range and I am back to working out after my surgery. But I don't want to take medicine the rest of my life. I am still hoping I'll go back to normal, wishful thinking. I would appreciate any comments. Thank you for reading this. I know it was long.
