I am new here and looking for some advice, My little boy who is 8 has been complaining of bad tummys for a while. We were recently on holiday and one day he looked like he was going to pass out went white with a funny head and bad feeling in his tummy. We took him off to buy a milkshake and some chips thinking he was perhaps hungry and within half an hour he bounced right back.
This happened again yesterday he looked so ill one minute at nanny's had a drink and a doughnut and was fine again....I have a glucose meter from when I was pregnant (as midwife thought I had gestational diabetes) so bought a meter to check it and decided to check him last night I checked him and he was 5.8.After he went to football practice I picked him up and took him to mcdonalds he had a happy meal with a milkshake. I took his reading 90 mins after and he was 12.9??? Now I don't know a lot about this but it seemed high to me it soon went back down to 5.9 at bedtime and has been between 4.2 and 5.8 today. Although I have not tested him since having his tea...Now can you have a 1 off high reading???... if it had been high today I would have got him a doctors appointment ( I did try but they said emergency's only!) And I don't wanna worry at this stage.... :?
I will take him to the docs as wanna find out the cause of the tummy things but not an emergency and he does drink lots and always been a sleepy boy who loves his bed a bit like me!!
I know I probably sound like an obsessive mum but do you think the reading of 12.9 could be just down to the mcdonalds?? And I am looking to far into this?

If anyone can help I would be very interested we have no history in the family of Diabetes by the way...

We cannot diagnose on the forum.You should really take him to the doctors for tests to put your mind at rest one way or the other.
 
I wasn't looking for a diagnosis was just wondering if anyone agreed I should get him looked at? Or whether I was just being a over cautious mum...

I thought someone may have took the trouble to reply? Oh well I wont bother you all again :roll:

Oh and I have him an appointment today if any of you wondered...

The advice you were given was correct and the comment about diagnosis is also correct. Seeing that you are taking your son to the Dr's is good.

As this is only your second post can I suggest that you either heed the advice given here or ignore it if you are still here in future - your choice. Your comments are not very helpful.
 
I asked 2 questions in my post, which took me ages to write :x LOL These were the questions

All I wanted was just one person to answer this perhaps put my mind at rest? I looked back all night and lots had read it, but no one replied and then when someone did it was to say see a Doc can't diagnose on here, I wasn't asking for a diagnosis? Just 2 questions. You don't like my comments so I wont post again just hope it turns out nothing with my son and hope anyone else new finds more answers here...

I have only just seen your posts or would have replied sooner.

As the mum of 2 diabetic children I would venture to suggest that 12 is a bit high. My daughter's consultant told us that in non diabetics the BG is usually tightly controlled between 4 and 6. Having said that, both my girls were in the upper 20's on diagnosis.

It MAY just have been the McD's, but I would not wait around to find out. DKA in a child can happen swiftly and terrifyingly once it kicks in. Your son needs a fasting blood glucose test to be sure, and get him to pee on a ketostix (available OTC) to make sure he's not becoming ketotic. If he is (more than a trace) get medical help asap.

OK. Q1. Answer would be Yes.

Q2. There could be a myriad of reasons for an elevated blood glucose level. Food, drugs,disease etc.
We do not wish to post things which could worry you even more ?

That is why the answer you were given was totally correct and in keeping with the ethos of this forum. We do not speculate, we deal in facts.

Thank you so much for your reply, I managed to get him an appointment at 10 this morning it's like getting blood out of a stone at my surgery! He was feeling fine yesterday and his levels stayed low so hopefully it's something else....So could be just the Mcds then? (I knew they were bad for you!!LOL)

Never heard of these stick things to wee on where can you get them from?

Thanks again you have been so kind how old were your children when you found out also we have none in the family and I thought it ran in families?

I think you are misconstruing the OP's needs. She was wondering whether or not she should be worried, not asking for a diagnosis.

As a parent I often wonder whether I should bother a Dr or not when one of my girls is poorly. Talking to someone else who knows about a particular symptom or whatever can help decide whether or not to proceed to the Dr. I remember quite clearly when my 2nd daughter to be diagnosed had a BG of 20+, I thought maybe it's a one-off, please God let it be a one-off, even though I KNEW in my heart (from my knowledge and experience gained with my other daughter) that it wasn't, and she had it.

This lady is concerned for her son, couldn't we cut her some slack here??

We are all concerned about this ladies son. However we are governed by the ethos of this forum and we would be wrong to do anything other than what we have posted here. If you wish to advise differently we do not have a problem with that. There are rules governing the advice we are allowed to give.

Ketostix are available from chemists without prescription. Sometimes they can be a bit 'funny' about selling them, so say they are for an adult Type 2, not for your son if you decide to get some. You probably won't need to now, as the Dr can easily test his pee for glucose and ketones using one of those multi diagnostic strips they use if you have a bladder infection etc. Make sure they do test his ketones - ask what they are and how many ++'s glucose (if any, hopefully not!!). If either of those reading are positive, they should either send you straight to hospital (if they're high) or arrange for a fasting BG for tomorrow am if it's borderline.

My girls were 2 and 8 when diagnosed, now 7 and 15! We have no history of Type 1 in either of our families, just bad luck they say!

Hopefully your son hasn't got it and he will be fine. Pse let me know.

As I made it clear that I have 2 girls with Type 1 and mentioned their consultant, I was reflecting back my own experience, so that's why it was okay I suppose. Thank you for clarifying it.

Have you seen how many carbs are in those things. Still, each to their own I suppose.
 
Heh, I was implying you should all be cool like frappuccinos

Besides, that's what massive bolus doses are for. :wink:
