Could I be diabetic?

Hello

I found this site after searching for a clue as to what the horrible smell is that I seem to be exuding from my body!

For some time now I have had uncontrollable high blood pressure, chest pains, very thirsty to the point of my mouth goes so dry it hurts, even under my tongue. I feel dizzy and disorientated and have really bad tinitus. I have dreadful difficulty in getting any sleep and have odd twitching in my leg muscles. My memory is awful and I have terrible shakes, they are so bad sometimes my fingers just tap uncontrollably on the keyboard. My thermostat is up the creak and I have terrible sweats then am cold. I am on HRT after a total hysterectome so I don't think it's that. I'm even having trouble doing things. I have to concentrate realy hard and my writing gets a bit dsylexic. I have to talk my way through writing and simple tasks. Not a good thing for a writer! I feel so ill and not at all normal, like I'm drunk and haven't touched a drop. I went on the bus to the shop the other day and the people must have thought I was an escaped nutter.

I first noticed the smell when my husband and I were staying at my dad's, who's a vegetarian. I thought it was his diet. Now we are in our own house it is still there and smells as if it is oozing from every pore and orifice. It's a really weird smell I can't describe. My husband can't smell it, but then his sense of smell has been impaired following coma after a head injury as a teenager!

I have recently had a the two tests for heart problems. The first to speed up your heart and have radioactive stuff injected followed by xray and MRI and the other to have the rest scan with just the radioactive stuff. I have to wait 10 days for results.

I did have a blood test for just about everything to see what might be wrong and my blood sugar was 9 and my calcium was low. I had a fast test which I think was 3~. I have had a bout of thrush recently too. I have had a great deal of stress to deal with and we thought it might be down to this. But after finding your site, I am wondering if indeed it is a diabetic problem. I just want to be normal. I sound like a right hypo but I want it all to go away. Any ideas would be greatly apreciated. I'm 52 if that is relative.
Thank you in advance :D

hi l read your msg im a type 1 diabetic and when l was diagnoses they were talking about a smell that can be a sign of diabetes ,also l suffered from thrush a few times which is also a sign ,when my sugar is low l get the shakes hot flushes pale in colour agitation and poor concentration ,im not saying thats what you have but some of your signs were similiar to mine ,also l worked for the mri unit and l know there can be a smell from the radioactive dye they inject ,put your mind at rest and go and see your gp to test you for diabetes .hope this helps .take care anne x

as already said, go get checked as it could be diabetes but may not be, the smell is when bloods are high and it is ketones that make a pear drop type of smell,
also the dizziness and tinnitus is an inner ear problem, have u had cold? could the smell be cattarh?
i have dizziness and tinnitus and undergone scans, hearing tests etc and the lack of concentration, feeling drunk can be due to this as i feel so ill a lot with it too,
you need to see your gp and get checked for all your problems,
good luck and let us know how u get on :D

Hi Gwenda ,and welcome to the forum ,You really need to go back to your doctor with your concerns and tell him/her all that you have told us.The doctor can run a whole battery of tests to see what is wrong. It could be diabetes it could also be thyroid related but we just can't tell you this on the forum but,by running more tests ,your doctor will be able to.
Please come back and tell us how you get on.Good luck .

Hello again :D

I went back to the doctor this morning and she said I definitely didn't have diabetes. She said the tests proved negative for that. The fasting was 5.5, by the way, not 3 like the nurse said. I have had blood tests to cover all things and it isn't thyroid probs either. She is puzzled by the smell I am getting and all the shaking and twitching and is going to have think about it and get back to me. She thinks it may be neurological and may refer me to check out that possibility! Olfactory or something. I have sharp pains in my head too, so she thinks an MRI for that alone would be an idea. I said we need House on the case and she laughed. Dear God, what an old fart I am!

Thank you for your help and I wish you all the best at keeping your diabetes under control and live long happy lives.

Hi Gwenda,

Good luck and I hope you get to the bottom of your mystery.

Hi Gwenda,
see your doctor.
Yes some uncontrolled diabetics do exude a "pear drops/nail polish remover" smell
