I've been on a low carb diet now for nearly three weeks i've been testing myself and my blood sugar is all ways between 13.5 and 9.6,this morning without breakfast it was 11.6,i'm starting to think i might be type 1 and not type 2 after all, still got blurry eyes and sleepy,i'm on 850g metformin twice a day and 80mg gliclazide twice a day,any idea's,shan x

You need to see your doctor again, asap.Ask for a C-peptide test ,this should confirm one way or the other which type you are.

I'm due for more blood test in April i'll ask for that on to be added, can't go and see the D.nurse yet as i sneeked behind her back Wednesday and got in with a new Doctor at my surgery for test strips as my nurse won't give me them,it worked the doctor gave me some but if i go back to see my nurse she might take them of me as she said i don't need to test(old school) i have got a cold at the moment taking nothing for it but can it affect my blood sugars has any one else stayed to high readings on a low carb diet, shan x

Hi Shan
Don't underestimate the effect having a cold can have on your blood sugars. It can send then rocketing despite all attempts to reduce them. Once the cold passes you may well see the level come down.

I have to ask,Shan, who has the authority in that surgery!!Surely a doctor prescribing test strips overrules a nurse any day!If your levels continue the way they are you are going to become very ill.Go back and see the same doctor again and explain about your high readings ,show him the monitor readings.Explain to him about having a cold as well,it is better to be safe than ill.

Hi,
You really need to test your ketones. You can buy Ketostix otc from chemists which you pee on and match up the colour the strip turns to the key on the side of the tub of strips. If you are indeed Type 1, you are at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which is caused by a relative lack of insulin. This will cause you to develop ketones that show up in urine. Your Type 2 medications will be of no help in this situation unfortunately. If you a start feeling nauseous, have stomach pain, headache, very thirsty, peeing a lot, lethargy, a 'pear drop' smell on the breath, please get medical help without delay. DKA is a medical emergency, you cannot afford to take a chance.
Let us know how you get on.
Regards
Sue
