Could I have diabetes despite a negative result?

Hi there

For the past six months, the frequency at which I need to urinate has become a bit of a problem. It's very sudden and I seem to be passing more fluids than I drink! I tried cutting down fluid intake and whilst I pass less, it's still at a high frequency. I'm on medication which has a side effect that may change the frequency of urination so I didn't think much of it. However, it has become a bit of a problem and other users taking the same medication do not seem to have this problem.

I started to notice that I seemed to have some of the other possible diabetes side effects including tiredness (again, a possibility of my medication) and slow healing of wounds (particularly my feet). My mother is diabetic so suggested that I went to see my GP.

I explained the symptoms to my GP and she was concerned that it would not be my medication and could be diabetes. I had a urine test and a blood test and both came back negative.

I decided to just live with it in the hope that when I stop taking my other medication, the problem might go away. Recently, I wanted to tone up. I have a BMI on 22 so I'm not overweight but not as toned as I used to be. So I decided to cut down the amount of processed sugar that I ate. At the same I noticed that the frequency that I go to toilet has returned to normal. It could be a coincidence but on days where I have eaten processed sugars, I have the same problem and need to go to the toilet often. I'm quite happy to cut out sugar if that cures the problem but I am concerned that perhaps I do have a mild form of diabetes.

So my questions are:

Is it possible that the diabetes tests can give a false positive result? If so, what can I do?

Is it possible that my body produces some insulin and can cope with small amounts of sugar and therefore the tests show that I am not diabetic when I having be fasting?

I seem to be OK with natural sugars but not processed. When I gave up sweets, chocolate and desserts I started to eat more fruit. Is there a difference between natural sugars found in fruit and processed sugars in chocolate or sweets?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi dvs,

It is possible for both of the tests that you've had done to have missed diabetes (assuming that the blood test was a HbA1C).

The renal threshold (the point that the kidneys start spilling glucose into the urine) can be as high as 12 mmol/l in some people, so the urine test isn't foolproof.

Because a HbA1c test only gives an average blood sugar for the last 8 - 12 weeks, it's still possible for your blood sugars to be spiking at certain times; although, a result within the normal range (3.5-5.5%) shows that your blood sugars haven't been running wildly high on a regular basis.

An oral glucose tolerance test has a better chance of showing up any problem better than a urine, HbA1C or fasting BG test.

All the best,
timo.

Thanks for the response timo. I will check exactly what tests I have had at my GP and will discuss the oral glucose test.
