Could the doctor be wrong?

Hi everyone. Firstly, what a fab forum this is! So many helpful tools and supportive people.
So, I think I’m prediabetic. Reason being, I have many of the symptoms which have been noticeable for the past few weeks or months and I’ve been getting high BS levels throughout the day. I have a test kit that I was given when pregnant, turns out I didn’t have gestational diabetes thankfully. So I’m testing in the morning (fasting test) and 2hrs post meals. Getting reading of around 7 and 8 half the time, high 6’s the rest of the time. Got bloods done 3 weeks ago as I’m registered as having polycystic ovary syndrome, and having spoken to the doctor today, she says my blood sugar levels from the fasting test were normal at 5.5. That’s as may be, but since then my kit results aren’t great, and my symptoms have got worse, especially getting sudden intense migraine type pains across my eyes, to the point I cannot open my eyes, only helped by eating something immediately. I explained all my symptoms to the doctor, but she remains unconcerned or convinced I have prediabetes, where as I belive I do, and am now on this website and forum finding out all I can to help myself.
My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience and if so, did you insist on further investigations by your GP?

Thank you in advance.

Are you also testing before you eat? Post meal levels are best analysed if you know what you were before you ate.

A fasting BG of 5.5 is normal.

Did you get a Hba1c test or just a fasting finger prick test?

In my opinion this kind of thing is a perfect example of why insulin screening should be readily available under the NHS (along with appropriate education in interpreting the data). These numbers are not especially high, but if they’re in that range for large periods of time then it’s likely that possible hyperinsulinemia could be creeping in.

Just something to be mindful of, as blood glucose concentrations or even HbA1c don’t always tell the whole story when it comes to diagnosis of metabolic issues.

Sorry to derail. Continue :)

When did you have the fasting blood test that showed your BG levels are normal at 5.5 for a non diabetic. Maybe your symptoms are due to something else so the doctor needs to find out why you are having them

Hi @DidoMcVig
Have you been able to take a BG reading when you have your migraines?
If you feel better after eating, they may not be related to high BG ... or anything diabetes related. The only way to tell is to test.
And then you will have more data to take to your doctor. Which I recommend as those migraines sound nasty.

3 weeks ago, the request was made to check up as I have PCOS, couldn’t tell you the last time I had one of these check ups. I was tested for gestational diabetes between october and December 2017 and not diagnosed. I agree, the doctor needs to be looking into why I feel so awful at times!

Unfortunately I haven’t had the kit to hand when I’ve had the sudden migraine. I definitely think you’re right, I need to see a doctor again!

Did you get a Hba1c test or just a fasting finger prick test?
I had a blood test 3 weeks ago at my doctors, the last few days I’ve been doing my finger prick tests at home, I am due another blood test next Thursday at the doctors. Not sure what Hba1c is?

I have been testing before I eat and 2hrs post meal, generally getting between 6 and 8

Try count your carbs and stay under 40 grams of carbs Pro meal and under 150 grams in total for a day , if you cant get normal numbers after a week you have a problem

The HbA1c test is a blood test. It is a measurement of the amount of glucose in your haemoglobin averaged over the previous 2 to 3 months, and is the test used to diagnose T2 diabetes. (It is not used for gestational diabetes)

.
I will need to discuss my blood test results in more detail with my GP I think, the conversation I had yesterday didn’t mention this. Thank you!
