Hi im very confused, just got myself a bs tester and tried it out and the reading was 4.7. I have yet to start new diet although have not eaten sweets or anything lik that for a week. If its this low surely im not diabetic. I suppose what im asking is, can they get the hbA1c wrong or can just cutting out sugar work so quickly. although im not into alot of sweet stuff any way. i think its carbs that may be my problem!
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

Netty, your reading on the meter simply reflects your blood sugar at that particular moment in time, whereas HbA1c reflects your average BG over a few months. They won't have got it wrong; if you ate a mars bar now, you'd soon see your meter racing up towards the teens. You need to use your meter to test 2 hours after eating to see how you react to different foods. If it goes abov 7.8 at the 2 hour stage, cut out some of the carbs in that meal. You WILL get low readings and high, but regrettably you're still diabetic! Mind you, the 4.7 suggests you should be able to control it well with a sensible diet.
Good luck!

Hi thank you for the advice,
So i tested 2 hrs after my meal of microwave hotpot and cauliflour cheese and it only went to 7.4 i assume then that that was ok to eat.
Also im now concerned as i changed the lancet and tested my daughter she was 11.6 but she had sweet and sour chicken and rice! do you think i should get her tested for diabetes. i did test her again 1/2 hr later and it had dropped to 6.5 however. i guess thats one meal i should avoid but now i am worried about her! She is 16 and on the large size size 16-18 but she is tall as well but she does love food. we have micro meals alot as i have mobility issues and cant stand up for long or chop things as it causes pain!
I know im a pain and feel like im over reacting about everything but i dont trust doctors or nurses through experience i have found they dont really listen to how these things are limiting my life and my family. i had a fall and hurt my shoulder once and it was assumed it was connected to my autoimmune condition had a frozen shoulder and sent to physio. i did everything they asked but it only made things worse. eventually the physio sent me for xrays and they discovered i had shattered the end of my clavicle. I was immobilized straight away but 8 weeks later it still had not repaired so was sent for mri, ct scan, ultra sound and they discovered not only the still broken clavicle but i had broken the top of my arm as well. Approx a year to the day i had fallen i had an operation to remove the broken peices of my clavicle, now i have a huge scar and im still in pain but i do have more use of my arm thank goodness. but this was not the first time i have been let down by the medical professional!
Sorry for the long message but i suppose im more freaked out by this dx than i thought!

Well done on the 7.4. So log it as a good meal for you, then check the next meal type. Keep a note of all your readings for future reference. Build up a book of "good" meals and ones to avoid. And yes, I'd DEFINITELY get a proper test done at doc's on your daughter. Your one off test isn't definitive, but it was a high reading and requires further checks. Do it NOW, 'cos if you catch it early she could do a lot to minimise the effects. Pre diabetics for example can go back to non-diabetic (but with warnings!) if they tackle it early.
Good luck and keep us in touch.

Hi,

How old is your daughter? If she is very young you can sometimes get weird blood sugars if you test them. The key thing about becoming a diabetic is if there is glucose in the child's urine; that means that the blood sugars have passed the 'renal threshold' and diabetes is much more likely.

I only know this because I'm slightly paranoid about my children getting diabetes and once got a blood sugar of 15 mmol/L(!) for my 2 year old. Clearly in the diabetic range or so I thought; having freaked out and contacted a pediatric diabetes specialist I was told that you sometimes get short highs like that and it's only if there is sugar in the urine that you need to take things further. And I was also told off for testing my son's blood sugars without any other symptoms...

So, my son's blood sugars came down very quickly and he is not, touch wood, a diabetic.

Keep an eye on it, but don't panic. Also, give you daughter vitamin D3 supplements (!)

Hi Dillinger, you probably missed it but the OP said her daughter was 16 years old and size 16 to 18, so I'd go for a test to be safe.

Doh! Completely missed that - yup, so scratch my toddler advice and get a check up!

Best
