yes it can be neuropathy...
but can also be a lack of nutrients
but as allways do go to a doctor and even a specialist with you backpain and problems..it is important to get a propor diagnosis too
If it is lack of nutrients magnesium is essential for around 280 different processes in ones body so a lack of magnesium can also lead to this sort of problems, also the cramps...Magnesium can be taken as a supplement just make sure it is not magnesia you are buying which is a laxative.. it must be the magnesium kind.
It can also be damage from the many years of diabetes.. or even sometig totally different only a doctor can diagnose. ormaybe a lack of pottassium (but pottassium is not good to experiment with so have it measured by GP and only take supplements of pottassium if doctor says you have a lack and only the recomended)
but if you gain total control now and keep your numbers down to normal by low carbing (in a healthy way of cause) then maybe your body can repair again.. I you end up with the diagnosis of neuropathy then the R-Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg daily maybe can be helpfull to you, here is a link to the cheapest I have found ;

and GP might prescribe Gabapentin which also often help a bit..
but please do go to a doctor now
