Could this be neuropathy?

Hey guys!

I have had various symptoms for a while and have been diagnosed with a bunch of stuff from chronic fatigue, severe depression to fibromyalgia. My diabetes control over the last 15 years has been pretty awful but I've changed how I think about it recently and I am really taking the metaphorical bull by the horns, trying to control myself and my condition once and for all (or at least keep it under control.)

Anyways, I've had 'mystery' chronic pain since I was about 23 (I'm 31 now). It started with a burning and tightening sensation in my calves and my feet cramping up so badly that I am unable to walk. That never really went away, though the weather does seem to affect it somewhat. For about 3 years now I've had light to severe pain in my knees at night, resulting in me being on amitriptyline which seems to help to an extent. Sometimes I get excruciating cramps in my feet and legs, so bad that I literally cannot move at ALL. I also get lower back pain often (but a lot less recently).

Basically what I'm asking is, could this be neuropathy? I honestly don't know much about it and my doctors didn't seem t explain it to me. I also assumed that the doctors would have picked that up straight away considering I've been T1D since I was 16, and they know my blood glucose were all over the place. Of course, I am not blaming the doctors, but I would like to at least know what might be up with me.

The reason I am asking this is because I have a few GP appointments coming up and I want to mention it. I'm not sure what kind of prognosis my pain will have, if it can be reduced or anything and I know it's probably all my fault.

I know this is also not the place for medical opinions, but I would just like to know if my symptoms sounds like neuropathy to those of you that suffer from it?

Thanks in advance!

If I were you I would have my calcium and magnesium levels checked. Neuropathy is in the extremes - starts in your toes and fingers, but most often toes, and has to do with your nerves, so tingling and numbness is what I feel in my feet. As it progresses I have found I also get sharp shooting pains.

Either way tell your doctor and try to control your diabeties the best you can. Worry about the things you can change, whether it is or isn't do what you can, and if it is stop it, if it isn't stop it. Get control and it may go away or at least not get any worse. Get as healthy as you can be within your own circumstances and the your doing all you can do.

yes it can be neuropathy...

but can also be a lack of nutrients

but as allways do go to a doctor and even a specialist with you backpain and problems..it is important to get a proper diagnosis too

If it is lack of nutrients magnesium is essential for around 280 different processes in ones body so a lack of magnesium can also lead to this sort of problems, also the cramps...Magnesium can be taken as a supplement just make sure it is not magnesia you are buying which is a laxative.. it must be the magnesium kind.

It can also be damage from the many years of diabetes.. or even somthing totally different only a doctor can diagnose. or maybe a lack of pottassium (but pottassium is not good to experiment with so have it measured by GP and only take supplements of pottassium if doctor says you have a lack and only the recomended)

but if you gain total control now and keep your numbers down to normal by low carbing (in a healthy way of cause) then maybe your body can repair again.. I you end up with the diagnosis of neuropathy then the R-Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg daily maybe can be helpfull to you, here is a link to the cheapest I have found ;
https://www.apo-rot.co.uk/details/f.../10732448.html?_nav=suche&_searchkeyword=frey
and GP might prescribe Gabapentin which also often helps a bit..

but please do go to a doctor now

Hmmm well I take multivitamins daily and eat a lot of veg (kale and spinach especially). Though I remember I did have a potassium deficiency when I was in my early twenties though! I'm having some blood tests tomorrow too, I'm actually looking forward to my GP appointment next week because I kinda just wanna see where I'm at!

Thanks for the inputs everyone too!

Just an update on this! The diabetes nurse thinks it could be neuropathy so I am worried about that, but I have a doctors appointment again soon (and one with the diabetology department at the hospital) to refer me various places to confirm/treat it seems. So I am in good hands!
