Since I've started taking metformin sr 500mg twice a day I started getting pins n needles in my hands n feet. Gp said nothing to worry bout. Now for last couple weeks I've been getting painful cramp in both my ankles shooting up my shins. Looked on line n apparently common in diabetics, any one else get this? Is there anything we don't get!!

Yes Suzy I do.

I get cramp in my muscles to the side of the shin bone in both legs, at the tops of the calves and in in my forearms and fingers. I've tried many of the standard treatments but nothing seems to stop it.

I hope you get your cramps successfully treated.

Glad to hear that Jaxx, what levels are you getting now?. I'm averaging about 12-13 currently.

I was often awoken at night with cramp in my calves, but I haven't noticed it so much recently. Hadn't put two and two together to realize they had minimized since getting my blood sugars under more control. Hopefully I have seen the back of them.

Pins and needles, on the other hand (or in fact both of them) are still present, with some days worse than others.

Regards,

Carol

I've always been prone to getting cramp but since diagnosis I get cramp in my ankles and up the outside edge of shin bone. I got it in the early hours this morning.

I'm not on metformin now but when I was I woke up with dead hands almost every night. I still suffer from that regularly but not every night. Last night I did and also one foot. It's happened in my foot twice before. I have good bg control. Last HbA1c in May was 35. I think it will be higher when I have my next one in November but I'm hoping not much. I've noticed a rise since stopping the metformin.
