Cramp

Hi
I was diagnosed a type 2 diabetic in March 2010. For a couple of years before diagnosis I was really ill. One of the worst things were the terrible leg cramps - both legs would stiffen from toe to hip and the pain was terrible.

Since starting diabetic control I feel so much better - No stomach problems and more energy than I have had in years. The cramp is much better too. But I still get a few painful attacks. Usually late at night.
Has anyone in the forum had a similar problem and if so what do they do about it - assuming of course there IS anything to be done - or do I just live with it :?:

Thanks
Gill

Hi GINNYFLY, I used to be a long term steroid (prednisolone) user, for respiratory problems and one of the side effects of this nasty but essential (in my case)drug, was leg cramps which occurred every night.

I was prescribed quinine tablets of which I took one each night at bedtime and they worked perfectly, I never had another leg cramp in my three years of steroid use.

Ask your GP about the possibility of a quinine prescription, I have also heard about people having similar results by drinking a bottle of tonic water each night as they contain quinine too.

One word of warning though, if you take quinine in tablet form you should not drink too much tonic water as an overdose is possible.

Hope that helps.

Try taking magnesium - it worked for me.

Thanks Sid and Daisy
Thanks for your suggestions of Quine and Magnesium . I like the sound of the quine tabs - as I hate tonic water. Will also try Magnesium from the health store
Good luck and thanks for making me feel welcome

Hi
I used to get so many cramps in my legs especially at night. Since I cut the carbs they have 100% been consigned to history. This LC diet works.

Leg cramps can be caused by lack of calcium. The magnesium supplements would help you to absorb calcium from your diet, as would extra vitamin D. Worth a try
