CRASH COURSE

Thank you all for your replies.

I have a sneaky feeling that she isn't eating large enough portions - I cant say for cetain because I'm not there. I have suggested that she tries certain foods to see what causes a rise in sugar levels, plus of course what may upset the bowel. I realise its going to be a long process, but would like to see the weight go back on a little quicker than it is. It could be she is still recovering from the illness and has yet to get her appetite back properly. Time will tell.

Is she under weight, or just less than before she was unwell?

At the moment I would say is is definitely underweight. Before the illness she was 10st, height being 5'6. Whilst the weight did increase after the infection cleared up and she started eating some food, she has now dropped back to 9st 4lb, and I have to say looks 'thin' - she also seems to have very little energy at all.

Using the NHS BMI Calculator, she's not clinically underweight. In fact, she's almost bang perfect.:

(I used age 50, but age doesn't change the results.)

She may look a bit drawn because she's not been too well, but I wouldn't be too stressed about regaining the few pounds. They may just reappear in time, anyway. For now, I'd support her in maintaining great levels and building her low carb diet meal options - keeping the protein and fat levels up.

That is most helpful AndBreathe. Maybe we are both being a little impatient, expecting her to bounce back quickly, which isn't going to happen. Thank you for the BMI information, I've just tried it on myself, and I had better knuckle down to getting some pounds off.

If she concentrates on feeling well, her body will sort itself out probably, or she'll get used to being slimmer. Neither would be catastrophic. The BMI thing is just a guide - but the healthy band is quite generous really.

Hi again,

I second (and third) what everyone else has said about weight loss, fats and proteins.

The only thing to add is this:

When I was... er... much younger, I went abroad and picked up a tummy bug that lasted for between 3 and 6 months. Three months of serious symptoms, and then 3 months of recovery. Interesting experience.

In the end my parents frogmarched me to an alternative practitioner and she was the person who made the difference (my doc had been remarkably unhelpful).

Anyway, what has stuck in my memory, is that she said something along these lines
'After a tummy upset that lasts more than 7 days, the lining of the intestines sloughs off, and may take a while to recover. Food absorption may be reduced until the lining grows back.'
She advised really high quality ingredients, a good multi vit and mineral, plenty of water, and avoiding grains for 3 months.

The grain avoidance was (if I recall correctly) was because the husks of the grains can be a bit abrasive on the gut lining.

Now, I'm just telling you this for information. Many people reject all 'alternative' advice. And that is O.K.
But I do remember that I began to feel MUCH better after following her advice!

I am 5'6" and told I'm lean and just muscle..I currently weigh 9st 12. I can go to 10st 2 and still fit in to size 10's easy. Currently size 8.
Anything under 9st 12 and I am told I look ill...and the size 8's hang.. And yet I still have a good normal bmi.

I think a lot depends upon whether persons are toned muscle or not.

Thanks for that Brunneria - I am very open to 'alternative' advice. I have thought for a while that this is going to be a long job. However, I did see her today, and whilst she is thinner than she normally is, she looks quite well. I think it may be down to stamina, which only time will sort out - and I feel she should be eating more than she is, so I have suggested that while she is eating smaller portion, maybe a snack in between would help.

It's a wait and see situation really, but the levels are good, so we will build on that. I will pass you advice on to her, and thanks again

Sally

Thanks for that Donnellydogs - As she has been unable to do almost anything since taking ill, it could very well be that the muscles have lost some 'bulk'. Maybe once she is able to get back to her normal activities she will build up her muscles again, and like you say, that will make her appearance a lot better. Thanks for pointing out something that should be taken into consideration.

You're sounding very much more settled today, Sally. That can only be a good thing.

You're right AndBreathe, now I have been able to see her, and have seen for myself how much better she looks than last time, I am feeling so much better myself. Have to say I have felt worn out with all this, and I'm not ill - think we are on the mend now, touch wood.

I do thank everyone who have offered help and advice, and once I've rallied, I'll be back with some questions of my own.

Sally
