Hello All,
I have recently been diagnosed with End stage Kidney Failure and this has also brought with it Type 2 diabetes as the pancreas has also failed now.
Yesterday I had a funny turn and would appreciate any help advice and info.
I went to friends and when I got out the car I felt dizzy. I do not remember anything for the next 2 hours apart from sweating and wondering what was going on. My friends said I was sweating a lot and slurring. I do not drink but they all thought I was drunk. eventually my friends got me home and I managed to do a blood test and my reading was 3.1. after an insulin shot and a sweet snack it climbed to 5.2. Today I woke and it was 7.1 after eating and 2 hours later again I started to feel dizzy and having sweats and hot flushes the reading was 3.1 again. I had something to eat and 20 mins later it was 15.4. I just do not seem able to get it steady. Any help and advice would be great

Just a small thought from a T2 not on insulin....why the insulin shot?

If you are hypo then I would assume a few jelly babies were called for.

I was told by consultant to keep my readings between 5 + 12. outside of this to take a shot?
Ummm......again as a non insulin user.....

I think the advice probably was intended to be "if the reading is above 12 then take a shot".

Insulin lowers your BG.
A reading of 3.1 is a definite hypo - i.e. your BG is getting dangerously low.
Taking a shot of insulin in those circumstances could be very dangerous.

Insulin users will be along, but a rule of thumb might be that if you are below 4 then you should take a small (with an emphasis on the small) amount of fast acting sugar such as jelly babies to bring you up above the line, and then test again.

I think you need some more detailed advice on how to manage your BG by balancing carb input and insulin dose.

You are more likely to get this quickly on the T1 forum.

Cheers

I really think you need further medical assistance regarding your health needs ...hope you feel more in control then ..sounds like you are not having a very nice time ....take care ..let us know how you get on ...Kat

You should not take insulin if your having a hypo, that is very dangerous and you must have miss heard your consultant as they wouldn't advise this.

As Kat says, you need advice on reducing your insulin doses if you are experiencing a lot of hypo's, your diabetes care team are the best people to give this advice, just be sure to keep a diary with your bg readings, insulin doses and carb intake.

Good luck and so sorry about your kidney problems and diabetes, both must have come as quite a shock.

Hi and welcome!

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I agree with the others - adding insulin when your blood glucose is already low is potentially very dangerous.

I should check that with your medical team as soon as possible.

In the meantime (since it is Sunday afternoon!), I should start a thread in the type 1 section of the forum, and ask for advice there. They are all insulin users, and can give much more informed answers!

Best wishes, though.
It is a grim situation that you are in.

Thanks for your advice. Maybe when I was having a hypo I just did not know what I was doing LOL.
