Over the last 4 months I have moved my blood sugar down steadily to a normal average of 6.0 and my hca1 in jan was a reasonable 42 down from 48 in November. I am eating carefully and have lost weight. I relaxed and stopped testing too much. I have started checking regularly and results disturb me. Last monday my post dinner level was 8.3 . and then went to 7.1 at bedtime. On Tues the post meal was 6.5 then wed the post meal was 8.2 . Yesterday my fasting was 6.3. This morning my fasting was 7.2, then at midday it was 5.4 now pre dinner it is 9.0. What is happening???? I am eating carefully, no alcohol low carbs. Should I be worried about these big variations after a 2 month period of results from 5.3 to 6.5.
Thanks for any advice reassurance. I am 73 yrs old and not overweight at 78 kgs.

Hi Livewire. First it’s not just food that can affect blood sugars, so have you been ill, in pain or stressed recently? If not, when you say you’re eating carefully and low carb, can you tell us for example everything you ate today, maybe we can help you tweak things for better levels?

Hi Rachox. Breakfast a plate of porridge with blueberries. Late lunch 4pm tuna salad no dressing and 2 teaspoonfuls of my wife's cake desert (plain cake with some whipped cream) . 2 boiled eggs for dinner. During the day a had a handful of almonds and a few dried cranberries. 4 cups of coffees with milk no sugar.

This would be a fairly normal day for me.
As for stress we actually moved house this week but it went quite well.

I think the house move might have affected you more than you think. Moving house is supposed to be one of life’s most stressful events. I would see if things improve as you settle into your new house. Other than that, I personally wouldn’t eat porridge for breakfast but testing before and after will tell you if it’s that that is upsetting your levels.

Hi again. This morning my fasting level was a reassuring 5.4 ! I will do another postprandial and report back on that.

My 2 hour post prandial was a healthy 5.8 so I guess I can stop worrying and assume it was the stress of the house move
