Cutting calories may actually make you put on weight.

When you cut calories, you increase your body's production of cortisol, the "stress hormone", which scientist have linked to the development of belly fat.

Cortisol cannot tell that a diet is an artificially induced food shortage and releases it to protect you as it did for our ancestors when there was famine.

In this study it was found that the reduction of carlories to a low level, 1200, brought on cortisol and subsequent weight retention.
