D.A.F.N.E. course

Not been on it myself as I am type 2, but I've never heard anything but good feedback from those who have attended it.

Hi

My MOT is next week and I'm going to ask about the DAFNE course, I think I would benefit greatly from it. I've checked the website though and it hasn't been rolled out in West Yorkshire EWPCT yet :(

Hi

I posted a topic earlier regarding this, i went in November and i thought it was superb i understand how much to insulin to give myself with each meal before i got told you will get the hand of it??? yeah right blind leading the blind more like!

Hi Sweet-pea

That's my sentiment exactly! And after nine years of ill control I'm ready to be educated :D

Done it. It's great. And very intensive. You learn a lot. Everybody should do it. Most of the people reduce their insulin intake afterwards because they know better how to control their diabetes.
Do it if u can.
:)

My diabetes team did an adapted version of the DAFNE. one they had arranged themselves. I was grateful to have the opportunity as I would not have been able to do it otherwise. I am on glargine as well. things did work out better for a while. it does occassionally work for me, but I do have some difficulties.
I'd say the course was the best learning I have done with the diabetic team. I still feel my information needs a bit of tweeking though, so if you get the opportunity to go on one of the courses, good luck and go for it!
i find it very hard to get new information that can help me, so any suggestions gratefully received!

Cant say how good the DAFNE course was. My HBA1C was 11% before I did it and now its down to 8.4%. Ok its not perfect but a lot better. Made some good friends as well who I keep in touch with. Nice to have diabetics to rant to when things not going right!

I did the full DAFNE Course in Ireland last year. I would thoroughly recomend it to all Type 1 Diabetics. You will probably find that your long acting insulin is reduced, perhaps drastically. My glargine (which I was on before the DAFNE course commenced was reduced from 24U per day to 14U! Subsequently I've changed to Levemir twice daily - split 8U PM and 6U AM. Hypos, a problem pre DAFNE are now a rare event, withouty an increase in HBA1C.
Also since the DAFNE course I lost almost 1 stone weight - as between meal snacks and a super of digestive biscuits are no loonger required. If I want a snack it is just a matter of a quick blood test, and a jab of insulin.
The best part is that after 28 years with Type 1 Diabetes I no longe live in fear of the Hypo, and can enjoy chocolates and cake - just so long as the Carbs can be worked out.
Every Type 1 should have the opportunity of the DAFNE course, and not some "half baked" do it your self programme.
While it may seem like going back in time - to have a written diary and to record all insulin, carbs and exercise, as well as alcohol, it's all worth it, and results become apparent within weeks of completion of the week long DAFNE course. :D

hello,

I have very recently finished a Dafne course, my advice to anyone thinking about attending is GO!

I was sceptical about what the course would contain, sitting in a classroom with a load of other diabetics sounded like hell on earth to me, but after even the first day it became very clear that this had the potential to be life changing.

I made good friends as well as learing so very much in that 5 days....the important thing now is sticking with it!

have recently changed meds and am working through some difficult days, but the main thing for this chat is that i have discovered the Bournemouth web page for help with the likes of DAFNE.

Very interesting. has helped me and I have had diabetes for a long time and apparently did a version of the DAFNE 5 years ago. not as well explained as this site. Have already made improvements.

I am ready and have already began 'un learning' and 'learning' again.

Its refreshing to have help from people who are interested in make a difference :D
