I wanted to do the course but i know that the DAFNE course is for adults, i was just wondering if anyone knew what the one for children (under 16's) is called?

Hi Laura,

I haven't seen a course for children mentioned on the forum. It would seem that most parents rely on professional help from their team.

Hopefully someone will reply who may know more than this.

Catherine.

Laura,

I am almost sure there is a junior version of DAFNE available, sure it has been mentioned here on this forum. Ask your diabetes nurse if she knows of any courses available in your area.

Please can someone tell a newbie who is a bit thick what dafne is?

Hi carty,
It is a course that is run for Type 1 diabetics and means Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating and Exercise.

Why would you know what it means if you have never come across it.

Thanks Catherine glad you are there to sort us out! As type 2 I dont have to worry about that. CAROL

Carty,

It stands for 'Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating'.

Basically, it is a course for adults with type 1 to show them how to adjust insulin to match the carbs in your meal. It learns and teaches you to count carbs correctly and adjusting insulin so that blood glucose levels remain stable pre/post meal times. It involves working out insulin to carb ratio's, as many, including myself have a different ratio throughout the day, i.e I need less insulin on a morning that I do at night to match the same amount of carbs.

Hope this is helpful!

I haven't encountered any dafne courses in South Wales for kids but the paediatric dietitians I know teach kids individually.
However many kids units run weekends for diabetic children where carb counting is a major part of the weekend and they mix that with a lot of activities to make it more fun. Ask the DN they would know!

DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) is an adult only course so only available for the over 18's, But some clinics might offer carb counting sessions with the diabetic dietitian and nurse which would be helpfull...

The difficulties with offering it to children, is that children mature at different ages, both physically and mentally so to cover what would be needed, in an manner that would be able to be taken on board in a group of teenagers would be almost impossible, so it easier to work on a one to one bases
