Hi all parents

My 15 year old daughter recently had her diabetic review where she had her HBA1c level tested. This had increased to 83!! This came as quite a shock to myself and daughter as all of her daily readings for the last 3 months have been within range between 5-8 . My daughter uses the smart meter so all the readings are connected to laptop which then logs readings so I know the readings she logs are accurate . She did have a few high readings over Easter but those alone shouldn't cause such a high HBA1c . The diabetic team asked daughter if she had been getting other family members to test or watering down her readings . We both found this rather upsetting although I do understand why they asked as like many teens this has been a bumpy ride with my daughter previously recording lower readings in her log book. I don't believe this is still the case and this wouldn't be possible with the meter she is using.

My daughter will now be having a continuous monitor fitted in a couple of weeks which will pick up readings 24hrs a day over a 6 day period.

Has anyone else been in this situation , what could be causing this ?

Just to put her results into perspective, my HbA1c is under 40mmol/l yet I most definitely have levels that are above 8 mmol. I also go below 5mmol/l. I consider myself fairly well controlled; 5-8mmol/l is a really narrow range.
HbA1cs are normally pretty accurate but obviously if there are only a few readings each day she could miss the highs and the lows.
Sadly, and I hesitant to put this but there are methods to make the meter record a falsely low result and they happen fairly frequently . |This why your doctor asked the question.

(the bg readings are in mg/dl so you need to divide by 18)

The CGM will show exactly what's going on during the week being tested.
(as a parent of a once teenage daughter, I think that it's probably best to wait for the results .)

A HBA1c level at 83 corresponds to an average bg of around 12.8 mmol/l.
With your own recorded readings to be just around 5-8 mmol/l, then it could indicate a couple of scenarios:
1. The bg reader does not work (highly unlikely, especially if you test/compare with your backup meter).
2. The tests you do take, are maybe just done 'when knowing you are in the safe zone' with good results. It is certainly quite suspicious if you only have readings in the 5-8 mmol/l range, as that is almost impossible with T1 except for a seasoned low carber and/or sitting still without moving and just eating the same day in day out.
3. The bg reader results/logfile is being tampered with. Either dilution of blood sample and/or correction in the measurements database.

Highest chance for number two. If you want to experiment, measure bg before meal, but also like 1-2 hours after. Personally I always measured before, to decide insulin volume for the meal, but rarely after, despite I knew I might go through some spikes. I only had bg test sticks for in average 4.5 tests per day, so found it most important to measure before meals and not after. And then again measuring just before going to bed. So meter analytics indicated lower average bg over 3 months period compared to the HBA1c indicated for same period. Though must admit, not as big difference as you indicate in your posting.

I think in this age it has a relationship with a grow hormone..you should make some lab tests to be sure that everything is ok!!
