Today I took part in a survey by DARE (Diabetes Alliance for Research in England) of volunteer diabetics, which I think is an attempt to join the dots between our past medical history and present symptoms and treatment for some giant computer to crunch the numbers and pronounce useful conclusions.
I thought it might be a chance to spread the good word about the forum and get a free breakfast. In fact the researcher (not diabetic), being outside the "system" of approved diet & medication, gave due weight to what I said instead of constantly interrupting "yes, but..." which is what many of us encounter. We compared my LCHF diet to hers (gluten free) and agreed on the need for exercise.
Anyway I praised up the forum and may be recalled for other projects. It is also part of a wider survey of 10,000 citizens of all types, although I'm not sure why. In due course they will no doubt issue fascinating media soundbites about people's behaviour to justify the cost ...
I couldn't help thinking in the huge, new, echoing, well-equipped cathedral of this research building with 16 empty beds waiting for diabetes patients alone that something;'s wrong when they are closing 12 beds in our cottage hospital. The researcher agreed and mentioned that she earns "a pittance."
Breakfast turned out to be white-bread toast & marmalade, but never mind. The coffee was ok.
