Dartmoor Pony

No way !
Being a horse loving lady .
Totally against this one .

What will it be next our own pet animals ?
Feed them up on grass then eat them . :mad:

Having eaten horse on the continent, possibly!
Given the standards required to rear an animal for food, it would certainly raise the standard of living of the horses/ponies, as being well fed but being killed would probably be better than the slow death by starvation and illness that some equines endure.
As long as their value exceeds the meat value then they would never have anything to fear. No-one is making this compulsory for ALL equines!
 
Would not go down well in my vegan type diet.
Dare I recommend donkey burgers to our LCHF members,
I have no problem with meat and how necessary it is for food etc;
We all love animals yet in a sense we all draw a blind eye to what happens to pigs, cows,chics etc; and now maybe Donkey's.

OMG why would I want to eat a horse....... the answer would be NO what would be next dogs? cats? and we a loving animal society or supposed to be so many animals now go missing daily ...WHY is nothing done I can just imagine their owners grief at losing their beloved pets.
 
As both a meat eater and a horse lover it doesn't actually bother me as long as the horses are bred for food not cast off riding or driving pets.

I am far more concerned about the conditions that the animals live in and that they have good lives and that their death is quick and painless. I would rather buy a small amount of free range chicken or outdoor bred pork than large quantities of factory farmed meat.

However I have had horse meat while abroad and I will admit that I didn't like it, but that is just a matter of taste.
 
If I ever encounter a horse it triggers an allergic reaction. So I probably would not risk horse meat. As I never eat burgers and ready meals etc I probably haven't inadvertently eaten horse.
 
Heard the discussion at lunch time and it was getting rather heated. Eating horse meat has been the topic of conversation on Countryfile lately, some suggest that if horses had a higher value on them (as in ,meat) they would be less inclined to get neglected and mistreated.

Would I eat horse meat, well I would try it and see if I liked it first, but unless there was a need then I'd rather stick to the meats I eat now.
 
I would eat the meat as long as there was regulation on how the animals were treated. In the New Forest there are often too many foals born and the poor things are often sold for pitiful sums then transported to the continent in horrific conditions. Some of us have possibly eaten horsemeat without knowing it after the recent food scandal and I've eaten horse in France. The regulation on their treatment would be the important thing form me.
 
NO, I wouldn't eat this meat ( pony/donkey). I am not a huge meat eater, I like fish better, I don't eat lamb either. Leave the Jack's and Jenny's alone

I buy my fish from Morrisons, and definitely dead, and as the thread is about the possible consumption of Dartmoor ponies, it's still a NO.
 
I eat venison. Not farmed, wild, free range. Very healthy meat and tastes good. Not so sure if wild pony would taste similar, and be as healthy to eat.
 
Well, it wouldn't be for me if I am allergic to it.

I have eaten horse donkey and bison. To be honest they were at least as good as beef. Bison is better.
 
I often feel hungry enough to eat a horse, though.
 
I eat meat - as far as I can see, the only difference between eating a cow, a pig, chicken, a little lamb, a bunny, a bambi, or a horse, donkey or even a dog (apart from their flavour) is our emotional reaction to the animal concerned? They all have equal rights to life and good treatment, so it's basically only our traditions and conventions that makes us think there's a taboo on eating certain flesh.

Making these sort of choices is a luxury they didn't have in the past when meat, any meat was not always available. And that's not changed in parts of the world. If we won't eat them in the UK and there is a market elsewhere then to me it makes both moral and economic sense to send the meat there. Why waste perfectly good food? The alternative is what?

Yes, certainly it's important to keep animals well. That's on the whole good husbandry anyway; we have a very poor farmer in our village and I've seen him lose both cow and calf by not making regular visits to a field containing pregnant cows. (and he would have lost money on that as the regulations meant that the carcasses were taken away to be inspected and disposed of)
They sell donkey sausage (dried sausage) to the tourists in local markets during the summer. In reality they probably don't have much donkey in them . However, donkeys that came to the end of their useful life would have been used by their owners for meat. As would everything else, it's a waste otherwise. Most of the houses including ours have lots of rabbit hutches and many of the neighbours still keep big fluffy white rabbits for the pot When their chickens stop laying they will also be killed and cooked.

. And of course all those wonderful ancient pigeonnieres which litter the countryside round here, weren't there just to look pretty but to provide meat. eggs and manure.
