I've been reading some of the threads about low carbing, of which i find very interesting. I've got my first appointment with a dietician on Monday at the diabetic clinic at the MRI. The thing that is starting to worry me is that on my last visit to the chiropodist they gave me some leaflets of what to eat prior to my appointment to help try and get my BS levels down (last HBA1c 6.3, which i know isn't brilliant) and the thing that concerns me is that the vast majority of stuff was things like, wholemeal bread, pasta, rice and lots of spuds  . I thought all the afore mentioned would actually raise my BS levels but,"hey what do I know." :?

As i said i'm not there until Monday but it'll be interesting to see what they say !!!!!!

Take it with a pinch of salt. Or lo-salt if you're sodium sensitive.

There are some competent dieticians, but not many of them seem to work for the NHS. Come back and tell us if you struck lucky or if you just got the "Eat More Starch!" leaflet

FWIW it was through doing the exact opposite of what the dietician told me that worked for me

If they say "Eat more starch" Please ask why? if you can't metabolise it. I'd love to know their answer to that one.

I am going to ask that very question when I see dietician for first time next week - will post reply as you say could be interesting

Hi,
Having read a lot about Dietitians on this Forum, I think I must have struck it lucky with mine. I got a referral after complaining to my practise nurse that under the high carb low fat diet I was given, I was losing weight which I could Ill afford to do. While waitng for the appointment to come through I found this site and took the low carb approach and increased my fat intake, which resulted in my weight being stabilized and better BG control. To my surprise the Dietitian was happy
with the low carbing and even told me to increase my fat intake even more, through dairy products. I had a second appointment a few weeks later, and had to take my BG readings. She said she was happy with the results, and unless I had any probs there was no need for me to see her again. I wonder if she's read Berstein, maybe there are more like her I certainly hope so.

Best of luck
Graham

I hope so too, Graham. We've all had a bellyfull of the buffoonery. It would be great to think that newly diagnosed diabetics in the future might be spared the nonsense we've all had to endure.

All the best,

fergus

To stop you eating fat of course. Stupid woman!

Some where around here I probably still have the leaflet the doctor handed me, I think that was the basis of the advice, that fats are the One True Danger (and also sugar) and that eating lots of starch "controlled" your BG levels. Well of course it does, it controls them into orbit.

Ask her if she's willing to be cloned.

Yes it's true, an increasing number of Medical Professionals do finally seem to be following the plot. When you show them how much you can improve your numbers there isn't really much they can say (except "you're testing too much")

I got the 'base your meals on carbohydrates' speil when first diagnosed. When I questioned it and took in my bg readings i was told that i was testing too often! I really need to lose weight and kept questioning the high carbohydrates regime. I was sent to see a dietician and she wasn't much good. She advocated eating the weightwatcher meal range with loads of fruit, vegetables and, as usual, plenty of carbohydrates. I've enver been back but I still can't lose the weight!!

As any farmer or biologist knows if you want to fatten animals you feed them masses of grain

(see also: Pate de Foie Gras)

I simply don't understand the cluelessness of not believing this also happens to people

Dietician? What's that?

I live in the South of Scotland. I've had Type 2 for almost 3 years now, and apart from a 10-minute session with my GP on diagnosis (haven't seen hide nor hair of him since), and 6-monthly appointments since with a diabetic clinic nurse, I've seen no sign that my condition is taken particularly seriously. As for the rest...

Diet? Apart from a leaflet at the clinic, I've had little dietary advice - and even the leaflet went into the bucket after a few months, when I found that a meter and a low-carb approach was vital, whatever was said by the medics to the contrary.

Teeth? No dental services available at all in this area - I have to save my pennies and travel south of the Border.

Eyes? Had to make my own arrangement via a private optician. Finally got a clinical diabetic eye exam by the local NHS after two and a half years of banging on desks.

But I'm not particularly bothered - the longer I suffer from this condition, the more I'm convinced that relying on the NHS is definitely not a good survival strategy...

Actually I fib - just got a nice letter this morning telling me I'm entitled to a free flu jab - though where how and when is up to me to sort out with my local NHS. I'm not holding my breath...

Hi everyone
I promised I would post when I had been to the dietician and today was the day  Anyway I have to report that my dietician seems to be one in a million as she asked me loads of questions about what I eat, said I had an very good understanding of how carbohydrates affect blood sugars and said I was doing well with the changes I had made to my diet 8) Now comes the usual bit though she did say she thought I did need to cut down on the carbs to ensure I started losing weight and so that my bs stabilised however she thought my current intake was slightly on the low side but hey if it was working for me more power to my elbow so to speak  So I came away feeling pretty good Next appointment in 3 months but no pressure if I decide I can do without let her know as she thinks there is nothing she can tell me that I am not already doing :!:

My dietician is non-existatnt!! I have to 'request' to see her. Why bother as she's not all that good anyway. Much better advice on this site

Me too. The size of some of these experts would put all of us to shame!! Seen some nurses (male + female) at my local hospital so obese that it's a wonder they can actually do their jobs. I wonder if anytjhing is said to them?

I remember my son saying to my daughter when she first qualified as a nurse

'so when do you get the rest of your uniform then'

What do you mean she replied proudly showing off her navy blues?

'when do you get the fat bum!'

Sorry folks hope that does not offend

Chris
