Hi - I experience a regular Dawn Effect which happens when I wake up and has a BG rise of c.4mmol/l. (although it can vary) However I see a Sharp Fall in BG just before lunch which is not related to insulin. Is this to do with the Liver reabsorbing Glucose? Thanks

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
T2 here, but I see much the same.
In my case I see a rapid drop some time after noon.
This can be prompted by something small to eat, carbohydrate or not.

I have tentatively assumed that my Insulin Resistance is strong in the morning and/or insulin production is lower.
I assume that in the early afternoon my insulin production increases and/or my IR decreases.

It makes it very hard to work out what to eat when.

I have no idea how the liver might be involved.

Hi @Goggoggog - do you treat the Dawn Phenomenon with rapid-acting or just let it be? If you do and if you also bolus for breakfast, then beware that rapid-acting insulins can still cause BG drops 4-5 hours after bolusing, depending on what you eat in between.

In some ways - the reason that we have "lunch" at all (as a thing that lots of people stop what they are doing at the same time in order to eat food) is a response to this.

Your body is a complicated thing, lots of it demanding energy all the time for different reasons. Could even be that you are simply expecting lunch, which has the effect of your body prepping for it by increasing the demand for energy, The liver is very heavily involved in this, it kind of has a secret hotline to the brain and gut.. but essentially it's all normal...

Why do you think this has nothing to do with insulin?
Is it possible you take too much bolus with breakfast? Could your basal be too high to deal with your DP?

Or it is something else that you do that affects your BG?
Are you more active or relaxed in the morning?

I often think there are too many parameters to work out why my BG goes up or down and it is better to just deal with it than waste hours trying to work out why it happened?
If your BG drop predictably happens every day, it is easy to foreplan.

Hi,

What basal do you use?
When do you normally inject it??

Hi,

Are you thinking this may be a "Lantus spike"?
That could be a possibility if the basal insulin s Lantus (or, I assume the biosimular glargine) and it is taken 5 hours or so before the drop as the Lantus (glargine?) profile is not as flat as we would hope and some people notice it become extra potent after about 5 hours.

Good suggestion if that is what you were thinking. Even if it wasn't, thanks for the brain nudge.

Cold weather, angry people, queues,

How long after your last quick acting do you see this drop?
