Over the weekend I decided to set the alarm and do a BG test in the middle of the night to see if the high morning readings were caused by the 'Dawn Phenomenon' - turned out the reading was 6.4, usual getting up time 6.30am and usual BG reading around 8-9, so does this mean I do or I do not suffer from the 'Dawn Phenomenon'?

I take 2000g Metformin and one Sitagliptin tablet a day

My doctor wants me to get a HbA1c reading in the 5.5 area, I have yet to ever achieve this type of reading and the lowest to date has been 6.7.

I have gone onto Plain Greek Yogurt for breakfast with a few blueberries, either ham or cheese salad for lunch with no carbs, then evening meal where I allow myself to have meat with a couple of new potatoes and veg and I am still unable to get the readings lower, I have the new pots as my carbs as I am usually OK on potatoes.

So am I on the right path - am I expecting things to turn around too quickly, will the numbers continue to drop over a few weeks as long as I stick with what I am doing?

Any suggestions/ideas welcome

I know exactly how you feel. The lowest reading I have had since diagnosis in April is 7.2. I was actually really pleased as I was diagnosed at 17.something. I have very low carb diet and am increasing the fats, just a lot to get used to. My testing result show my readings are steadily coming down and I have lost a bunch of weight and my cholesterol is also well down and well within recommended levels. I am doing loads of exercise but have consistently high morning readings and if I haven't had anything to eat but run around Tesco or something it goes up too. So confusing, I am just having to be patient and carry on being determined and work hard.
I guess my body is just slower to react to the changes.
We will get there in time I am sure.

I'm quite confused now - I hate why HbA1C is usually expressed in mmol/mol and individual readings are mmol/L anyway, but the conversion seems to be about 6 mmol/L per mmol/mol, so the recommended HbA1C value to be below is 48mmol/mol, or about 8mmol/L. I'm very hopeful from my meter readings that I'm going to be below that at my next blood test (tomorrow), but I can't imagine how much more I would have to do to get down to 5.5, that's about 33 mmol/mol!

The page on this site describing HbA1C says the target for diabetics is 48mmol/mol, or about 8mmol/L: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html
