I have read a lot about this, and how you get a glucose dump when first getting up. My question is this; if I am getting up regularly through the night to take my disabled wife to the lavatory do I get this 'dump' everytime I get up?

No, I think when people talk of a dump, it's more like your liver performing a housekeeping function. Various hormones are released by your body ready fr getting up and this triggers a glucogen release from the liver. A non-diabetic's pancreas would see this and counteract with insulin.

Our pancreas doesn't work as well and therefore you see your blood sugar rising. Depending on how severe the rise is, you may have to bolus for it.

Just a thought, but if you could test whenever you have to get up you might find what time your liver dump starts, and maybe a small snack might help prevent it? Worth a try?
