I use novolog at my 3 meals
and when im invited to eat with family
that I don't live with im never sure
how to deal with the timing or food issues
for example
I time the novolog 5 hours apart
and the meals are never at the time
I can have any novolog
and there are never any foods made
that are not loaded with carbs
except for maybe sausage or turkey
and even the sausage can have carbs added
what can I do?
am I going to have to be left out?
it can take days to get any semblance of
blood sugar control back
after the high carb meals

I have to decide what to do in an hour
I don't want to mess up my numbers
ive been working so hard for so long
should I just eat the food and realize
things happen out of my control?
and move on and hope its
infrequent?

I would say to them "thanks for the invite, I'd love to eat with you. I'm on a special diet because of my health so I can either eat at home first, or bring my own food, or we can talk about what sort of foods I can eat. I also need to eat at a certain time."
IMO there shouldn't be a need to explain yourself more than that. You'd be giving them plenty of convenient options to choose from. Occasional diversions from your eating plan such as Christmas are probably no biggie, but if you are doing this every week or fortnight, then it may cause more problems than it's worth.
