Dealing with new diagnosis

I received a phone call yesterday from my doctor with whom I don’t have a great rapport with at the best of time with the result of my blood test. His actual words to me when I answered the phone were “Hello Adam, you’re diabetic” now considering I was not aware I was being tested for that I went for a uric acid level test I was a bit surprised.
He’s made an appointment for me to see the practice nurse in 2 weeks time but that’s it. I assume that has he’s left me for 2 weeks it can’t be that bad but I am worried. I know I am seriously overweight so hoping diet will be enough but I don’t know. My stress levels have hit new highs now. How did you cope when you were first diagnosed?

Well I take it from that that you'll have been diagnosed Type 2 so my experience will be highly different but I had no option but to cope, I was admitted to hospital to be diagnosed and was told I couldn't go home until I showed them I could inject myself, less than 24 hours after I was admitted I was sat at home facing a very new life of injecting myself at least 4 times a day and all a week before my 25th birthday, as a Type 1 I had no other option but insulin but if you start now in working on your diet and getting some more exercise then you may not need medication

What was your hba1c?

What is a typical day of food to you?

Are you in a place where you could afford to self fund a BG meter? as chances are you won't be provided with one unless they put you on a medication that could cause low BG but testing your own BG is the only way to find what foods work for you as the individual you are
xx

Hi there @AdamBates and welcome to the forum

This is a great place for support and information so hopefully we can get you through the next 2 weeks while you wait for your appointment and give you some pointers to get going with coping with the diabetes and of some questions to ask at your appointment.

As a starter I’d suggest having a read of this link: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.17088/ and ask any questions you might have about it.

The second thing to say is that you can do a lot to help yourself. Many of us here have turned things around - got our blood sugars into a non-diabetic range and/or lost some weight too, simply by changing what we eat. The key is to reduce carbohydrates as they all turn to sugar in the blood. Take a look at dietdoctor.com for more information on this as well as some great food/recipe ideas.

It doesn’t sound like you got much information from your doctor, but if you can it’d be great to ask for your HbA1c result. This will give you idea of how far along the diabetic scale you are and provide a baseline for monitoring your progress.

It’s a lot to take in at the start, but do make use of this forum and keep us updated.

Hello and welome,

The good news is that you have found the best place in the world for diabetics. I was diagnosed a bit over a year ago- after reading here went keto and lost weight and brought my blood sugars into the normal range.

The first thing you will need is a meter. You are likely to be given advice that you don't need to test- don't follow that advice. You are also likely to be told that you should eat a good amount of 'healthy' carbs- don't follow that advice either.

The diagnosis can take a while to sink in and acclimatise to- it's okay most people here understand that.

Start by reading around and asking questions- the people here are amazing and so ready to help and offer support. I would say the people here are the best thing of my diagnosis - I've lost over 30 kgs but while that is great it's not as great as the people here.

By the way reducing carbs meant I lost weight without trying and you may find the same.
