Dear All
I am soon to be starting a volunteer position as a story reader in a Primary School. I have Type 2 diabetes and would like to know if it is mandatory for me to declare my diabetes to the school where I will volunteer.
I am concerned that if I do I will be denied volunteering opportunities.
Where I do stand legally?

Hello Anna2007,

You don't have to declare your diabetes to the school. Why I know this is because recently I was told I didn't have to declare any health issues at a job interview! My concern being if I declare my health issues I wouldn't get the job; apparently is at your own discretion to tell them or not to. Protected characteristics are "age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation." https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/equality-act/protected-characteristics

You don't have to declare it but diabetes is covered under the Disability Discrimination Act so they could not use it as an excuse not to employ you.
My approach has always been to tell future employers because I don't want to work for someone who would discriminate and I would rather find out beforehand than have issues getting time off for appointments or complaints about me treating a hypo or something.
