I've just been in for my annual screening, and wanted to share the results. I've been type 1 for 25 years, and when I was diagnosed (living in the South Holland area of Lincolnshire), the approach they took to insulin and diet is what we would recognise as dafne now.
As a result, whilst I've had my ups and downs, generally I've had a relatively even keel in terms of Hba1c tests, not exceeding and generally coming in between 6.8 and 7.2.
My 25 year eye screening was fantastic. A couple of minor specs of retinopathy, but to say the nurse was pleased is an understatement. Shocked is the more appropriate term.
The reason I'm making this post is to make it clear that there is hope, and if you do manage your food and blood sugars well, and in a well balanced fashion, you can sustain a life whereby you limit your complications. Life doesn't have to be so terrible.
If you haven't done dafne then get yourself on the course and learn about it, or use the university of Bournemouth's online version.
There's a reason why Diabetes UK always used to refer to Balance, and this is it.
If you are struggling, I hope this gives you the strength to get back on it and rebalance. It's definitely worth it!
